STALLlON-SHIELD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,824, dated October 3, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beitknown that I, ORANGE B. FALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gan field, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Stallion-Shield; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which Figure 1 is a view showing the shield attached to a stallion. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the shield and its difierent attaching straps. Fig. 3 isa detached view of the metal frame. Fig. 4 is a view showing one of the elastic connections for the surcingle. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the pendent blade or plate and its piercing point. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the pendent blade or plate.

The present invention has relation to stallion shields and it consists in the different parts and combinationof parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings A represents the pendent blade or plate which in its completed condition is substantially of the form shown in Fig. p, and as shown it is provided with the arms a which are for the purpose hereinafter described. The frame B is substantially of the form shownin Fig. 3 and is preferably formed of spring steel; but it will be understood that any other material may be used without departing from the nature of my invention. To the frame B are attached the leather covers or pads a which are attached to the frame B by extending the edges of the covers or pads past and beyond the edge of the frame and sewing the extended edges together. The front or forward end of the frame B is bent or curved downward substantially as shown, and is so formed for the purpose of giving the finished blade or plate the desired configuration. To the bottom pad are attached the piercing points b which are preferably common tacks and are arranged substantially as illustrated in the drawings. For the purpose of assisting in holding the blade or plate A in proper po sition the arms a are provided which are so located that they will embrace the animals sheath, as illustrated in Fig. 1. To the covers or pads a are attached the straps c which are located substantially as illustrated and are for the purpose of providing a means for connecting the surcingle O to the blade or plate A which connection is preferably made by means of buckles; but it will be understood that other devices may be used without departing from the nature of my invention.

Forthe purpose of providing a yielding surcingle the elastic straps d are provided and are attached, and located substantially as shown. To the top or upper part of the surcingle O is removably attached the front or forward end of the back strap (1; the rear end of said strap being attached to the straps 61 The straps cl may be formed fiat or round as desired, and extend rearward, downward and forward, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2, and their forward ends are attached to the rear ends of the arms a and are for the purpose of assisting in holding the blade or plate A in proper position and at the same time preventing the ends of the arms a from injuring the animal.

For the purpose of preventing the straps d from pressing against the sides of the animals sheath the front or forward ends are originally formed so as to set ashort distance apart, independent of the arms a, or in other words they are so formed that they will not approach each other, thereby leaving the animals sheath free.

By forming the frame B of sheet steel or like material I am enabled to construct a shield that will be light and at the same time well adapted for the purpose designed. It will also be understood that by bending or curving the front or forward end of the frame B, the blade or plate A will be in proper adjustment for the purpose designed.
