No. 505,646f Patented sept. ze, 1893;-

MELVIN BANOROFT, OF WHITESBOROUGII, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO Tl-IE QUIGLEY FURNITURE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE. 4
TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,646, dated September 26, 1893.
Application led August 1 3, 18 9 2.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, MELVIN BANCROFT, of Whitesborough, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTypeVriter Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following isla full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin typewriter cabinets.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a front elevation of my improved cabinet in closed position. Fig. 2 shows a Vertical section th rough the well of the cabinet, the parts being shown in closed position. Fig. 3 shows the same section with the parts in open position. Fig. 4 shows the same parts in half open position.
Figs. 5 and 6 show enlarged details of the con-` struction.
The cabinet 1 is provided with well 2 having side walls 3 and 4 and a rear wall 5.
VAcross the forward portion of the wall is provided an inclined shelf support 6 extending from wall 3 to wall 4. Supported on the shelf is the movable type-writerplatforni 7, provided with studs or projections 8 engaging in grooves or slots 9 provided in each of the walls 3 and 4. The projections S are preferably provided on each side of the platform.
The well cover 10 is provided with a right angular front section 10iL adapted to form a front portion of the case when in closed position and the cover is mounted upon aswinging arm 1l pivoted to the cover at 12 and to the case at 13. On the side walls of the well are provided cam shaped blocks 14 rigidly secured thereto, and on which the arm 11 is pivoted. The arm 11 extends to the opposite side of the pivotal point 13 from the end to which the cover is attached and is provided with cushioned spring 15 which binds and slides on the cam shaped surface of the block 14. In the en-d of the arm 11 is provided aV pulley 16. A strap or cord 17 is secured to the rear end of the cover at 18 and passes around a pulley 19 Vpivoted on one of the sidewalls of Serial Nor 443,006. (No model.)
the well, thence around pulley 1G in the end of the arm 11, thence around a pulley 20` provided on the inner end of the platform, and is secured at its opposite end at 21 to the supporting shelf G. The inner end of the platform is provided with an extension 22, which may be hinged to the inner end of the plat` form and which extension is adapted to close the otherwise open space between the inner end of the platform and the coverwhen the case is in open position.
23 is a false bottom or shelf adapted to support the inner end of the type-writer plat form in closed position or the inner end of the well cover in open position.
The operation of the device is substantially as follows: With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, by grasping the forward end of the cover l0, and turning the same np- `Ward, the cover is carried by the arrn 11 up- `portion of the case, in the position shown in Fig. 3; at the same time, byreason of the connection made by the cord 17, the typewriter platform 7 is carried upward and into position for use; the projections S sliding along the grooves 9 in the walls of the well. The last movement is to slide the projection 8 onto the horizontal portion 9a o f the groove 9, in which position the inner end of the platform is supported against vertical pressure .and is prevented from tilt-ing over the shelf support 6 by reason of an excess of weight on the outer end of the platform. To'close the case, the platform is slid backward to get it off from the horizontal portion of the slot and it thence passes down into the case, causing the cover, by means of the connection 17 and arm 11 to rise out of the rear of the case and assume its position to close the case. The cover 10 is prevented from closing with a slam and is cushioned down by means of the spring 15 engaging the cam block 14. The shape of the block is such as to cause the spring to exert the greatest pressure and cushioning power at the time that the cover reaches its closed position.
The construction may be modified by dispensing with the pulley 16 on the end of the arm 11, and the portion of the arm carrying IOO it and providinga pulley in fixed position on the wall of the case or well about in the position in which the pulley 16 is in, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination in a typewriter cabinet having a well, of a sliding and tilting platfornl, a support upon which it is capable of sliding, a cover, an arm pivoted to the front portion of the cover and to the cabinet, and a flexible connection attached at one end to a fixed part of the cabinet and at the other to the rear end of the cover and engaging with the platform and passing over a fixed roller in the upper portion of the case, substantially as set forth.
'2. The combination in a typewriter cabinet having a well, of an inclined groove on the side of the well,a typewriter platform having a projection engaging in the groove, a support for the platform in front of the well over which it is capable of tilting or sliding, a cover for the well, and a flexible connect-ion attached at one end to the cover and at the other to a fixed part of the cabinet and engaging with the platform, and a fixed roller between its points of attachment, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a typewriter cabinet having a well, of a platform mounted therein, a support in the front ofthe well over which the platform is adapted to slide and tilt, a cover, an arm pivoted to the front end of the cover and to the case, substantially midway between the front and back of the well, and a flexible connection connected at one end to the cover and at the other with a fixed portion of the case and engaging with the rear end of the platform and a fixed roller in the upper portion of the case between its ends, substantially as set forth.
4. A cabinet having a well, a platform support in the front of the Well, a sliding and tilting platform, a cover, an arm pivoted to the forward end of the cover and to thecabinet and carrying a pulley in the end of the arm, and a flexible connection extending between the platform support and the rear `end of the cover and engaging with the arm and the platform, substantially as set forth.
5. Atype-writer cabinet having a well, a sliding and tilting platform, a support for the platform in the front of the well, a cover, and a iiexible connection attached at one end to the cover and at the other to a fixed part of the cabinet and engaging with the platform and with a fixed roller in the upper part of the case between its two points of attachment, all combined substantially as set forth.
6. A type-writer cabinet having a well, a sliding and tilting platform, a support for the platform in the front of the well, a groove or guide on the wall of the well behind the support inclining from the front downward toward the rear and provided with a short horizontal rest at its upper end, a projection from the platform engaging the groove or guide, a cover, and a liexible connection attached at one end to the cover and at the other to a fixed portion of the case and engaging with the platform, and a fixed roller in the upper rear portion of the case between its two points of attachment, all combined substantially as set forth.
7. A type-writer cabinet having a well, a sliding and tilting platform, a support for the platform in the front of the well, a cover for the well, an arm pivoted at one end to the front end of the cover and at the other to the cabinet, substantially in the middle of the well from front to rear and extending beyond its pivotal point and carrying a roller in its swinging end, and a flexible connection attached at one end to the cover and at the other to a fixed portion of the case and engaging with the platform and a roller in the end of the arm between its two points of attachment, combined substantially as set forth.
8. In a type-writer cabinet having a Well, a tilting platform mounted in the well, a cover for the well, a connection between the rear end of the cover and the inner end of the platform, an arm pivoted at one end to the front end of the coverandnear the other end to the case,a camming block secured to the case at the case end of the lever, and a spring mounted on the arm and acting on the camming face of the block, combined substantially as setforth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MELVIN BANCROFT.
