The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of fences and t provide one of great strength and durability which will be capable of successfully withstanding the strains incident to its use.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended. y

1--1 designate vertically disposed flat bars forming an end post and having their lower ends secured to a transverse plate 2, which is designed to be arranged in the ground, and which forms a partial anchor forthe end post. The lower ends of the vertical bars 1 are arranged in a vertical cylinder 3 which is constructed of suitable material, such as clay, earthenware, similar to tiles, sewer pipes and the like, and which has a filling Il of cement, artificial stone or the like.

Each end post of the fence is supported by an inclined brace 5, disposed'longitudinally 0f the fence and having its upper end clipped to the bars 1 and having its lower end recessed at 6 and engaging a projection 7 ot' a horizontal plate 8. The horizontal plate 8 is connected by parallel stay rods 9 with the ends of the horizontal plate 2, and it is arranged on the surface of the ground, the stay rods inclining downward from it t0 the bottom of the end post. The clip or clamp for securing the upper end of the inclined brace 5 to the corner post consists of a bolt and clamping plate 10, which engage the edges of Serial No. l135,052. (No model.)

the bars 1, the bolt passing between the bars and through the plates 10 with its nut 11 ari ranged against one of the plates, and its head engaging the upper end oi' the brace and holding the same against the other plate. The projection 7 is cylindrical, and the lower end of the inclined brace 5 is flattened, the notch or recess 6 being curved to conform to the configuration of the projection 7. The plates 2 and 8 are provided at their ends with perforations and the stay rods 9 are provided at their ends with hooks 12 which are linked into the perforations of the plates 2 and S. By forcing the upper end of the brace downward the stay rods 9 are tightened, and the end post may be rigidly supported in an upright position.

The fence wires 13 are secured to the end posts by suitable ratchet wire tighteners 14 for stretching the fence wires to any desired tension, and they are supported between the end posts by intermediate posts 15, only one of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, but more are designed to be employed as will be readily understood. The intermediate fence post 15 consists of a flat bar, a transverse base plate 16 secured to the lower end of the bar, an upper plate 17 and inclined braces 18 secured to the ends of the plates 16 and 17. The lower ends of the braces 18 are provided with hooks, and are linked into perforations of the lower transverse plate 16; and the upper ends of the braces are threaded and secured by nuts 19 in perforations of the upper plate 17. The wires 13 are secured in inclined kerfs 20 of the intermediate fence post, the kerfs being closed attheir outer ends after the wires are placed therein. The intermediate post is an; chored at each end of the lower transverse base plate 16 by a horizontally disposed cylinder 21 constructed similar to the vertical cylinder 3, but being of less diameter. The horizontal anchoring tube or pipe 21 has a iilling 22 and is connected by wire 23 with an end of the plate 16.

The fence is provided with stays 24:, and is anchored at those points by a horizontal transverse pipe or cylinder 25 similar to the pipe or cylinder 21. .,Qllhe pipe or cylinder 25 is connected by/a wire 26 with the stay 24 in ICO braced, and that the fence wires are supported at points between the end posts.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention.

The stays 24 are each composed of aseries of wire links arranged in pairs as shown.

What I claim is- 1. I-n a fence, the combination of a post provided at its lower end with a tranverse plate, ahorizontal plate arranged a short distance from the post, stays connecting the horizontal plate withthe. transverse plate-of thepost, and an inclined brace detachably engaging the horizontal plate and having its upper end adjustably .secured to the'post, substantially asdescribed.

2. In a fence, the combination of a fence post provided at its lower end with a trans- Verse-plate, a horizontal plate provided with a projection, parallel stay rods secured to the transverse and horizontal plates, and an inclined brace provided at its lower end with a notch to engage the projection and havingk at its upper end a clamp adj ustably securing it to the post, substantially as described.

3. In a fence, the combination of apost com'- j posed of parallel bars, a plate secured-.tothe lower ends of the bars, a cylinder receiving the bars, a horizontal plate provided with a projection on its upper face, parallel stay rods secured to the horizontal and transverse plates, an inclined brace having its lower end engaging said projection, and its upper end :arranged adjacent to the post, and a clamp for adj ustably securing the brace to the post and composed of similar clamping plates and a bolt passing through the plates and the npper end ot"v the brace and provided with a nut, substantially as described.

4. In a' fence, the combination with fence wires, of an intermediate post comprising a `Vertical bar having kerfs receiving the fence wires, upper and lower horizontal plates, the

braces connectingthe plates, and the anchors arranged beneath and connected to-the ends of tfhe'lower plate and each consisting of a `pipe having a filling, and means for securing it to the plate, substantially as described.`

5. Ina fence, the combination with fence wires, of an intermediate post comprising a vertical bar and upper and lower plates having `their ends connected by braces,.tubnlar anchors disposed longitudinally of thefence and located below the lower plate, and. means for connecting the anchors to the ends of the sa1ne, substantially as described.V
