SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,331, dated September 19, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES SOOULER, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Negative and Screen Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming apart thereof, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved negative and screen holder. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 isa rear elevation of the outer frame. Fig. i is a transverse section taken on line altl in Fig. 3. Fig. 5isa front elevation of the inner frame. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 66 in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is ahorizontal section taken on line 77 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 8 is a horizontal section taken on line 8-8 in Fig. 5.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The object of my invention is to provide a negative and screen holder for use in photoengraving, which will hold the negative and the sensitive plate in proper relation to each other, thereby avoiding the necessity of adjusting the screen for each plate.

The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

The frame A, is provided with a rabbet a, on one side, and is furnished with recesses 11 upon the opposite side which are located at the corners of the opening of the frame. In the said recesses are pivoted the spring buttons 0, being made of spring material which are provided with pointed ends d, capable of being swung into the opening of the frame, and at the corners of the frame are formed recesses e for receiving the ends of the cross bars f, used to increase the distance between the sensitive plate and the screen.

In the rabbeted side of the frame A, are inserted silver wire staples g, which extend across the corners of the frame and serve to support the sensitive plate inserted in the rabbeted side, and also serve as supports for the screen B inserted in the opposite side of the frame and held in place by the spring buttons 0. A

To prevent contact of the sensitive plate with the wooden portion of the frame A, wires h are driven into the frame, forming additional supports for the sensitive plate, which wires lie in the same plane as the wire staples g. Silver wires 6 are also driven into the frame at right angles to the wire staples g, and serve to prevent the edges of the plate from touching the wooden frame.

To the rabbet (it is fitted a kit or auxiliary holder 0, for receiving a smaller sensitive plate. The said holder 0 is furnished with silver wire staples g extending across the corners, and with wires h extending inwardly in the same plane as the staples g, and wires 1" extend transversely across the inner edges of the frame 0, to prevent the sensitive plate from coming into contact with the frame. The staples g are arranged with reference to the staples 9 so that they lie in the same plane as the said staples when the frame 0 is inserted in the frame A, the said staples g lying within and parallel with the staples g. The screen plate B maybe placed directly upon the wire staples C, or the strips fmay be interposed to increase the distance between the screen and the sensitive plate held against the opposite sides of the staples g,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a frame rabbeted on one side and provided with supports for supporting a sensitive plate in the rabbeted side of the frame, of spring buttons pivoted on the opposite side of the frame for holding a screen in this side of the frame,'substantially as described.

2. The combination with aframe A, having one side rabbeted and provided with the recesses b e, and with supports for a sensitive plate, of the spring buttons 0 pivoted in the recesses 12 and adapted to hold a screen in the frame and the cross bars f having their ends fitting in the recesses e and serving to space the sensitive plate from the screen, substantially as described.
