Be it known that I, GEORGE H. VAN WAG- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wappingers Falls, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Check-Hook, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to check-hooks, and has for its object to provide means in connection therewith to prevent the accidental disengagement of the check-rein from the hook; and with this and other ends in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as willbe more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a check-hook shown mounted in position and the improved attachment in connection therewith, showing the check-rein in engagement with the same. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the check-hook and the attachment therefor disconnected from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the improved attachment disconnected from the check-hook.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a check hook that is secured in place by a bolt 2, that passes through the lower free end thereof and extends into the A horizontally disposed plate or arm 3 has its rear end mounted on the said bolt 2, and is located under the lower horizontal member of the check-hook, and at its opposite or front end the said plate is slightly flared upwardly, as at 4, and formed with an eye or loop 5, in which is seated a ring 6. The front side of said eye or loop 5 is provided with a pair of transversely-extending arms 7, that are slightly curved and `form a stop to hold the ring at a normal elevation obliquely above a horizontal position to always position the same in such manner that it may be readily engaged without having to lift it to insert the check-rein therethrough. The plate, loop, or eye and the arms are all of integral formation and con- 5o structed from a suitable sheet-metal blank,

thereby simplifying the construction of the same both as to expense of labor and time and also cost price.

In operation, the check rein is passed through the ring and up over the check-hook. By this means it will be seen that the rein will be prevented from being thrown out or disengaged from the check-hook accidentally by the movement of the animal in any direction, and therefore a very advantageous ar rangement is provided. It will be under'- stood that the ring will be of suflicient diameter to allow the bight of the check-rein to pass through it for the purpose of engagement with the said hook. When it is desired, the check-rein may be readily detached, as in the ordinary arrangement.

Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Along the opposite edges of the plate or arm 3 are laterally-projecting arms 8, that are arranged to be bent up over the horizontal member of the check-hook in order to assis-t in more securely fastening and holding the said plate or arm 3 in position.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new isa l. In combination with a checkhook, a horizontally-disposed plate attached to the fastening bolt of said check-hook and having an eye or loop at the front end thereof, with arms projecting transversely from opposite sides of the same, and a ring movably mounted in said eye or loop and arranged to bear upon said arm whereby said ring may be supported above a horizontal plane for ready engagement, substantially as described.
