BOOKBINDING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,049, dated September 12,1893. Application filed November S0, 1892. Serial No. 453,574. (N o model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN KROGER, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Art of Bookbinding; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication.

My invention relates to an improvementin the art of bookbinding, and has for its object to secure each section of book both at the top and bottom by independent threads. 1

A further object is to secure the threads to a kettle strip both at the top and bottom by passing the thread entirely around the strip and forming the same into a kettle stitch upon the inner side of the strip, with the ends of the threads projecting therefrom, to allow of securing the ends to the back by adhesives.

The invention consists in the parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings: Figure lis a perspective view of a book constructed in accordance with my invention, and ready for the cover. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the center of the section, showing the course of the thread and the manner of tion being also open to breakage of the threads by any other means whereby the sections are released.

My invention comprehends a separate fastening for each section, so that if the thread is broken, but one section is effected. I am enabled to accomplish this desirable object by the employment of a kettle strip l arranged transversely of the back of the book 2, at the top and bottom, and in assembling the sections 3, I pass the thread 4 around the strip either at the top or bottom of the section and tie off by a kettle stitch, leaving the end 5 of a length to secure the same to the back by an adhesive, and then pass the thread to the bands 6 and around the same and finally around the kettle strip at the opposite end of the book, and tie off bya kettle stitch, taking a new thread for each section and following the same operation until the book is completed, after which I secure the ends 5 to the back by an adhesive, the projecting ends of the strip being of a length to secure to the cover.

It will be seen that by means of a strip I am enabled to employ independent threads for each section, and thereby form a more secure fastening for the sections than heretofore.

In a book, a series of leaf sections, a single independent binding thread for each section, the kettle strips secured to the back of the sections at the top and bottom, and the bands secured to the sections intermediate the kettle strips, the binding threads being passed through the sections, around each band, and secured at their ends to the kettle strips.
