POCKET BOOK OR CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,884, dated September 12, 1893.

To all whom zit/may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Pocket Books and Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.

This invention relates to pocket books, card cases, instrument cases and similar cases adapted tobe carried about the person in pockets or reticules, and has for its object the better-durability of such cases, the avoidance of wear upon the clothing and facility for superior neatness of finish in manufacture.

To this end the invention may be concisely described as consisting of an improved form of frame so shaped as to afford an efficient continuous support to the flexible folded part of such books and with curved or round outline in other portions so as to avoid exposed angles and in an improved mode of applying and securing the leather or other flexible portion of the book to the frame so as to protect the clothing from contact with the angles of the frame.

The construction of the invention is hereinafter fully described reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a combined pocket book and card case embodying this invention, opened and with the back upward; Fig. 2, a sectional view thereof showing the position of the frame, flexible back and clasp. Fig. 3 shows in an enlarged section the parts contiguous to the clasp, and Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the frame in closed position.

1 represents the flexible leather back having attached to its inner side the pocket 2 with the cover or flap 3 and tuck 4. The part 5 is flexible and folds around the edge of the other side of the book or case as shown in Fig. 1.

6 is the frame formed of light plate metal having the inner angles 7 made right angled so as to furnish a continued straight support to the fold 5 when closed upon it. The other angles or corners 8 of the frame 6 are rounded. Both parts of the frame 6 are made of an angle or L-shape in cross section and are united to each other in a hinge 9. Plates 1O placed inside serve to hold the leather 11 to the frames 6, rivets 12 passing through the plate 10, leather 11 and frame 6. holding these parts together. The leatherback 1 is made of such size as to cover the frame 6 so as to only expose the edge to view and to wear when the book is closed. The leather 11 is passed through a cleft or slit in the frame 6 and is formed in one piece with the back or outside of the pocket 2.

The slit through which the leather 1 is passed in the frame 6 is marked 13 in Figs. 3 and 4: of the drawings; the position of the leather 1 in the slit 13 is shown in Fig. 3. A clasp 14 with a projecting rib 15 and. a hook 16 secured to one frame 6 engages in a slot 17 in the other frame, serves to hold the frame 6 in closed position and is liberated by pressure on the rib 15 disengaging the hook 16 from the slot 17. The pockets of this book may be made of any of the usual bellows shaped forms of sides. When closed they lap over the frame 6 and protect them from contact with the clothing of the wearer or' bearer. This form of book permits all of the seams or edges of the leather to be turnedinwardly so that none of the scams or out edges are subject to wear.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a pocket book or case the combination of a flexible back, with a frame havinga slit therein for the insertion of said flexible back, straight edges united by a clasp opposed to the flexible fold of the back, and opposite curved edges united by hinges and covered upon the fiat side by said flexible cover substantially as set forth.

2. A frame for pocket books and cases consistin g of two angled frames united by a hinge upon the curved sides and having right lined edges united bya spring clasp, and provided with a slot in said straight side to receive the leather forming the back of the pocket book as described and shown adapted to sup-' port a flexible fold of a pocket book substantially as set forth.
