SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,880, dated September 12, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL BURGHART Kome, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Altona, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anti Smoke and Gas Protectors, (for which I have obtained a patent in Belgium, No. 94,168, dated March 17, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a helmet for protectin g the wearer against smoke and noxious gases.
The helmets heretofore generally used for a similar purpose, required the inhaled air to be cleaned by filters, which were apt to become inoperative in a short time. To overcome this objection, helmets were fed with fresh air and to this particular class of helmets, this invention relates.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section of my improved helmet.
The helmet proper a, is made of the usual form. It is provided with a face mask b, of leather and with a softleather cape c, reaching down to the shoulders and adapted to be strapped tightly around the neck by a belt (1, so as to exclude air. In front of the mouth opening, there is secured to the mask, a tube f, provided with a branch tube g. The tube g, is adapted to be connected to a hose that conveys fresh air to the helmet from a bellows, or an air pump. To enable the wearer to talk, the tube f, is closed by a screw valve h, that can be operated at will. The tube g, is provided with a branch'tube i, that serves as a coupling for the hoseleading to a safety lamp.
To expel the exhaled air, the tip of the helmet is provided with a valve consisting of tube m, having valve seat lo, and lateral openings Z. Within the tube m, is contained a light ball valve '21.
The sweatband o, of the helmet is perforated as at 10, to effect an easier and more ready ventilation. This prevents the sight glasses g, from becoming damp and obscuring the vision.
The advantages of this helmet are that it works at all times properly, that it does not molest the wearer, and that the wearer can readily communicate with others by opening the valve h, and without removing the helmet.
What I claim is- The combination of a helmet with tube f, having screw valve h, a branch g, for coupling with the fresh air hose, and a branch 11, for coupling with the lamp hose, substantially as specified.
