To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN SCHWARTZ, a.
citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Mask, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a new and improved gas mask more especially designed for army and industrial use and arranged to enable the user to breathe freely and without danger of inhaling noxious gases with which the surrounding air is charged. Another object is to eliminate dead or exhaled air at the mouth and nose portions of the mask. Another object is to insure proper vision and to prevent noxious gases from reaching the eyes. Another object is to. provide a gas mask which can be comfortably worn by a person and which is l neat in appearance and not unduly heavy and cumbersome.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodimentof the invention is represented in the accompanying draw# ings forming a part of this specification, in which lsimilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The body 10 of the gas mask "is made of animpervious fabric material, such as a closely woven textile fabric covered on the inner face with rubber, and this body 10 is provided with an upper open portion 11 and a lower tubular portion 12 extending downward and forward, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper portion 11 of the body 10 is provided with eye openings 13, the walls of which are engaged by mountings 14, preferably made of rubber, and having their outer portions formed with grooved rings 15 engaged byfthe marginal edges of lenses or panes 16 of glass, celluloid or other suitable transparent material. The mountings 14 are integrally connected with each other at the inner side of the mask by an elastic part 17 which normally draws the part 18 of the upper portion 11 and lying between the eye openings 13 into a puckered condition to allow the elastic part 17 to stretch with a view to insure tight fitting of the inner face of the mounting against the face of the wearer around the eyes. It is understood that the elastic part 17 of the mounting is detachedfrom the nonelastic part 18 of the flexible upper portion 11 of the body 10, as plainly shown in Fig; 5. The sides of the mountings 14: are provided with integral extensions 19 on which are secured the inner ends of attaching elastic straps 20 extending sidewise and secured by stitches 21 to the side edges of the upper portion 11 of the body 10.` The free ends of the attaching straps 20 are adapted to be passed around the wearers head to be fastened together at the back of lthe head by suitable fastening devices such as buckles, snap fasteners and the like. By reference to Fig. 5` it will be noticed that the parts 22 of the upper body portion 11 and lying between the openings 13 and the stitches 21 are puckered by the fixed ends 19 and the adjacent attached band portions to vallow of stretching the-ends 19 and the band 20 on drawing the latter tight around the wearers head thus insuring an exceedingly tight fit of the inner face of the mountlngs 14 and their extension sides 19 on the face of the wearer around the eyes to prevent gases from reaching theI eyes. It is understood that by making` the mountings 14.- of rubber the lenses or panes 16 can be readily inserted in the rings 15 or removed therefrom in case theyare broken to permit vof replacing the same lby new ones.
Into the tubular portion 12 of the bo'dy 10 ts a respirator casing 30 provided with an outer purifying chamber 31'f1lled with charcoal or similar material 32 charged with a neutralizing chemical for neutralizing the acids in the poisonous gases with which the su-rrounding air may be charged. Thus charcoal may be charged with a chemical for neutralizing carbon monoxid in the a1r,
such as palladium chlorid or sodium palladium chlorid or similar chemicals ma be used according to the nature of the po1sonous gases to be encountered at the time.
In order to hold the charcoal 32 in position in the chamber 31 use is made of perforate disks or nettings 35 and 36, ofA which the netting35 rests on a perforate bottom 3-7 screwed or otherwise fastened into the lower end of the casing 30. The nose facin 45 is provided with two upwardly exten ing lugs or plugs 46 spaced apart and adapted to pass into the nostrils of the wearer-s nose. In order to permit a safe -escape of the foul or exhaled air from the chamber 40, use
is made of an exhaling device 50 havingta tubular casing 51 forming an integral part of the casing 30 at the front top portion of the chamber 40. The casing 51 is provided with an opening 52 leading into the chamber 40 and normally closed'at the upper end by a valve disk 53 held loosely in a chamber 54' arranged in the top of the casing 51. This chamber 54 is closed by a screw cap 55 and is provided at the sides with openings 56 for the escape of the exhaled air. A spring 57 is introduced between the cap 55 and the top of the valve disk 53 to normally hold the latter in closed position in the bottom of the chamber 54 to prevent noxious gases from passing by way of the openin 52 into the chamber 40. It will be noticed t at when the air is exhaled by the wearer of the mask into the chamber 40 then such air can pass through the opening 52 and lift the valve 53 to allow the exhaled air 4under pressure As ,soon as the pressure within the chamber 40 to pass out through the openings 56.

The lower ends of each strap 60 is provided with a number of diverging straps 62 sewed or otherwise fastened at their free ends to the sides of the tubular portion 12 of the body 10 at the inner face thereof. lt will be noticed that 'by the arrangement described, the straps 60 are drawn tight on adjusting the straps 20, as previously explained, and consequently the straps 62 exert a pull on the tubular portion 12 to draw the mouth facing 41 firmly in contact with the face portion surrounding the mouth of the: wearer, and at the same 'time the nose portion 45 is drawn tight to liable to be drawn into the chamber 40 andY in order to safeguard against any particles of the charcoal reaching .the mouth use is made of a deiiecting plate 7 0' arranged within the chamber 40 and extending from the bottom of the mouth ortion 41 forwardly and upwardly approximately parallel with but spaced from the top 38 of the purifying chamber 31. lt will be noticed that by extending the respirator in a downward or a forward direction it presents no` undesirable projection and does not seriously interfere with the -wearer using weapons, tools or the like. It will also be noticed that by arranging the respiratorl in this manner and supporting it directly by the elastic straps 62, 60 and 20 from the back ofthe head of the wearer all undue strain on the face of the wearer is prevented, and consequently the desired comfort -is enjoyed lt will further be noticed that/ by the user. the gas mask is very serviceable for soldiers and other army workers for protection dust in gas attacks in battle and to protecty the eyes against lachrymatory gases that maybe used. In practice, the casing of the respirator is inserted from the inner face of the body 10 and is held in the tubular portion 12 by the outwardly Haring sides of the mouth facing 41 and by the casing 51 of the eX- halatoijextendingl through an opening in 0 portion 12, as plainly indicated in the drawings. If desired, the respirator can be readily removed for cleaning or sterilizing purposes, for replacing the charcoal and recharging the latter with a purifying chemical whenever it is necessary to do so.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A gas mask, comprising a body of a pliable material, lenses mounted on the upper portion of the saidbody, and a respirator mounted in the lower portion of the said body, the respirator having a close fitting facing for the mouth 'and a close fitting facing for the nose.

A gas lmask provided with a respirator having a purifying chamber and a breathing chamber, the breathing chamber having a close fitting facing for the mouth of the wearer and a close fitting facing for the nose of the wearer, the said `mouth facing having an opening leading to the interior of the respirator and the said nose y leading into the interior of facing having two apertured plugs adapted to extend into the nostrils of the wearers nose, the'saidplugsv having their opening the respirator".

A gas mask provided with a respirator having a purifying chamber and a-loreathing chamber, the breathing chamber having an inclined and apertured inner wall to lit the mouth and a top wa'll to fit under the the nose of the wearer, the said respirator of the wearer and a close fitting facing for having an'outer purifying. chamber filled with 'purifying material and having an inner breathing chamber intermediate the said purifying chamber and the said facings, the latter having openings leading to the said inner breathing chamber, and a valved eXhaler connected with the said inner chamber to allow escape of the exhaled` air.
8. A gas mask provided with a respirator having a casing made of solid material, the casing having an outer purifying chamber filled with an air purifying material and open at its outer end to the atmosphere, the said vcasing having an inner breathing chamber in communication with the said purifying chamber, the said casing having a close fitting facing for the mouth, and` a close fitting facing for the nose, the mouth facing having an opening leading to the said breathing chamber, and the nose facing having two apertured plugs communicating with the breathing chamber and adapted to extend intothe nostrils.
9. A gas mask provided with a respitor having a close fitting facing for the mouth of the wearer and a close fitting facing for the nose of the wearer, the said respirator having an outer purifying chamber filled .with purifying material and having-an inner breathing chamber intermedi: ate the said purifying chamber and the Said facings, the latter having openings leading to the said inner breathing chamber, the said inner breathing chamber having a defiecting member extending outwardly from the lower portion of the mouth facing.

A gas mask provided with a body of a flexible material having eye openings and a lens mounting of elastic material and arranged on the inner face of the said body, the said lens mounting having connected rings fitting the walls of the said eye openings and provided at the outside with grooved flanges, and lenses having their marginal edges iitting into the grooves of .the flanges.
14. A gas mask provided with a body of a flexible material having eye openings, and
a lens mounting of elastic material and arranged on the inner face of the said body, the portion of the lens mounting surrounding the eye openings being attached to the inner face of the said body and the portion between the eye openings and the sides of the mounting being detached from the body, 'and attaching straps secured to the said sides of the mounting and to the side edges of the saidbody.
