FOLDING PAPER BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,824, dated September 12, 1893.

Be it known thatLWILLIAn H. Coox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Folding Paper Box, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to folding paper boxes; and it has for its object to provide an improvement in that class of paper boxes in which the same are so constructed as to be capable of being arranged'in aknocked down condition, so that the same can be shipped flat.

To this end the invention primarily contemplates a construction of folding box special locking devices which provide for holdingv the box securely connected in its various parts, as set up.

With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box set up. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and i, are detail views illustrating the mode of securing the corners of the box. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank, from which the box is cut.

Referring to the accompanying drawings A represents the paper blank from which the various parts of the herein described box are out and scored. From opposite edges of the rectangular bottom B at b, are scored the opposite side walls 0, and the end walls D, while from one of the side walls 0 at c, is scored the inclosing rectangular top E of the box.

From the ends of the opposite side walls 0 at c, are scored the side wall flaps F, at the scoring points of which are formed the straight corner slots or slits G, which are adapted to receive the corner locking tongues H,cut and scored from opposite edges of the end walls D. The said corner locking tongues H are cut from the blank and scored as at h, at a central point on the opposite edges of the end walls D, and are cut in a curved shape so that atthe bases or scoring points of the tongues, the edges of the end walls form rests or shoulders which serve to sustain the ends of the box rigid and firm. The said corner locking tongues H are slit at one end to form the supplemental tongues or looking flaps I, which flaps are adapted to be folded back upon the body of the tongues so that the latter can be readily inserted in the slots or slits G at the bases of the side wall flaps F. When the said supplemental locking flaps are folded back upon the tongues, the said tongues are then of a width equal to the slots or slits G, so that the same can be readily inserted therein, after which the said locking flaps are turned up into a line with the body of the tongue, so that the tongues will then be greater in width than the said slits and therefore will firmly lock the corners of the box without the possibility of withdrawal until the said supplemental tongues or flaps are again turned down. It will of course be observed that in setting up the box the end walls D inclose the side wall flaps F, which are held tightly against such end walls by the locking tongues described, and therefore completes a neatly finished yet securely set up box. The rectangular top E scored from one of the side walls 0, is provided with the side and front flaps J and K respectively, which flaps overlap the top edges of the box when the cover is thrown over the walls, and said front flap K is itself provided with an inte gral hook-shaped locking tongue L, which is adapted to be placed into locking engagement with the front slit M, formed in the other front side wall 0 of the box.

For additional security of the box after set up, I may employ the tapes or strings 0 secured at one end to the opposite end walls of the box and adapted to be tied over the inclosing cover as illustrated.

Havingthus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a folding paper box, the combination of the bottom, of the opposite side walls scored from the bottom and having side wall flaps, and straight corner slots or slits disposed at ICO the juncture of said side Wall flap with the side walls, and the opposite end walls provided with curved looking tongues H, scored from opposite edges of the same, and slit in from one end to form folding supplemental looking flaps adapted to be folded flat onto the body of the tongues H to allow for the insertion thereof into the straight corner slots or slits, and adapted to be straightened out IO inside of the side Wall flaps after the insertion of said curved looking tongues into said slots or slits, substantially as set forth.
