Description
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C. E. LOMBARD, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT-STOCKS.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,480, dated October 17, 1865.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be itknown thatI, C. E. LOMBARD, of Springfield, Hampden county, Common wealth ot' Mas sachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Bit-Holder for Bit-Stocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters ot' refreference marked thereon.
My invention consists in an attachment to a bitstock, by means ot' which, by asiniplearrangement, the bitis held securely in place, or by a single movement of one piece is left free, so that it may be easily removed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the bit end ot' the stock uppermost. Figs. 3 and 4 are partial side views. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the lower end of the stock.
I will now describe the construction and operation of my invention.
To the lower end of the ordinary bit-stock, or the end into which the shank of the bit is inserted, I attach, by means otl the pin A, the piece B. This piece has a hook or projection, 1,0m its lower end, which catches into a corresponding notch in the bit-shank when it is operated, as will be hereinafter described. This piece B is kept out by the spring c, and is prevented from being forced too far in by the pin b.
Over the lower end of the bit-stock and over the piece B, I t the collar D, held in place by the pin d, which projects through the spiral groove g. This pin d is securely fastened to the part E of the stock, and as the collar D turns the inclined or spiral groove g works 011 it (the pin d) insuch a way as to force the collar up or down, accordingly as the collaris turned in one direction or the other.
The operation of this invention is so simple as to be readily perceived from the foregoing description ot' its construction. It consists merely in inserting the bit, (supposing the collar to be at its lowest point on the stock, so that the bit may be inserted freely,) and by turning the collar the action ot' the spiral grooveg on the pin d forces the collar upward. This as it passes up acts on an inclined plane, m, formed on the piece B, and forces it in so that the hook or projection a enters the notch cut in the bit to receive it, and thus holds it in the stock securely. In removing the bit the operations are reversed, the collar turned in the opposite direction, which moves it downward and relieves the piece B, which is pressed outward by the spring c. It will be seen that in this way I accomplish the Object of this invention with the addition of few parts and in a simple and economical manner.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ot' the piece B, collar D, pin tl, and spring c with a bit-stock and bit, when arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
O. E. LOMBARD.
