SPECIFICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,780, dated September 12, 1893.

To cr/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Honnrro D. HEEETNG- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leslie, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in gates and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and delnitely pointed out in the claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a swinging gate which can be readily raised or lowered and which can be secured in its adjusted position, and means by which it can be opened in either direction and when in its closed position securely latched also uniting simplicity and cheapness ot construction. These objects are obtained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the gate in its lowered position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the gate in its raised position. Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view of the supporting post and the inner end portion of the gate and Fig. It is a det-ail view of the latch post.
ln the drawings A represents the gate preferably made of iron or other suitable material consisting of the vertical tubular end portions C, and C and the tubular diagonal brace D integrally secured to the end portions C C by the curved portions E E.
F is a securing rod permanently attached to the brace D at the curve E and extending up parallel with the end portion C, and then bent over and secured in the top thereof. To the securing rod F are clamped the longitudinal bars F extending across the gate and through apertures formed in the brace D and secured in any suitable manner in the end portion C of the gate. Y
B is the latching post having a vertical groove B in its inner face. Secured to two of the cross bars F by the clamp gis the latch rod G extending parallel to the cross bars and passing through the end portion C into the slot B of the latching post when the gate is in the closed position. Near the lower end of the slot B is a horizontal slit or groove b extending to the opposite side ot the post and having the inclined lower sides d. The slot B is of a sufficient length so that when the gate is in its lower-most position the latch rod G will rest on the bottom of the slot.
l is a brace rod extending from the end portion C attached to the securing rod and secured to the diagonal brace D.

Resting on the tubular casing J is a connecting plate K loosely mounted on the post J and loosely embracing the end portion C of the gate.

L is a hook loosely embracing the post and resting on the connecting plate K, adapted to engage the apertures la la 71:2 on the end portion G of the gate when the same is in raised position. The casing J connecting plate K and hook L is held in position by the nut L engaging the threaded portion of the post J.
M M are eye plates rigidly secured to the end portion C of the gate and loosely embracing the casing J on the post.
N N are collars on the casing on which the eye plates M M rest when the gate is in its lowest position.
As will be seen when the gate is in its lowermost position the latch rod G will rest on the bottom of the slot B' in the post B and the gate will be held firmly latched and by rais ing the gate until the latch rod G registers with the horizontal slit b the gate can be opened in either direction, and after being opened it will fall of its own weight to its lowermost position, and by providing the slit IOO b with the inclined lower edges cl when the gate is to be closed the latch rod G will engage the inclined edges d of the slitb raising the gate and allowing the latch rod to engage the slot B thereby automatically locking the gate. Or if desired to secure the gate in its raised position the aperture 7s in the end portion C of the gate is so arranged that when the latch rod G is parallel with the slit b in the post B it will engage with the hook L on the hinge post J. To latch the gate in this adjusted position a hook I-I is provided at one side of the post B below the horizontal slit b adapted to engage the latch rod G and prevent the gate from opening. When the gate is raised so that the hook L will engage the aperture 7o or k2 on the end portion (l of the gate the latch rod G will extend into the slot B and the gate prevented from opening. It will thus be seen that the gate will always be latched except when the same is adjusted so that the latch rod will register with the slit Z2 on the post B. By placing the connecting plate K under the hook L the weight of the gate in its raised position will be borne both by the connecting plate and hook thereby releasing the strain on the hook L. It will further be seen that by providing the securing rod F the longitudinal bars F will be held firmly in place by clamping the same to the securing rod and passing their ends through the end portion C of the gate thereby dispensing with nuts or riveting and adding greatly to the simplicity of the construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
l. In a vertically adjustable gate, the combination with the gate, the vertical tubular end portions and a diagonal tubular brace formed integral therewith, the inner vertical end portion having apertures formed therein; of a hinge post; a casing on the post; eye plates connecting the casing and gate; a connecting plate; a hook embracing the hinge post and resting on the connecting plate adapted to engage any ot the apertures in the inner end portion of the gate, and means for securing the parts on the hinge post, substantially as described.
2. In a vertically adjustable gate, the combination with a gate having tubular vertical end port-ions connected by a tubular diagonal brace formed integral therewith, the inner end portion having apertures formed therein, ot` a hinge post,a casing on the hinge post, a connecting plate, a hook embracing the hinge post, and resting on the connecting plate eye plates rigidly connected to the end portion of the gate, connecting the gate and casing, collars on the casing on which rest the eye plates when the gate is in its lowermost position and means for securing the parts on the hinge post, substantially as described.
