swmeme GATE.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, MATHEW REH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the county of Saline, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to agate construction, and more particularly to swinging gates.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gate, of this character, wherein the same is mounted for horizontal swinging movement in a manner to avoid the sagging of the gate and to permit the opening thereof to opposite sides of the gateway.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a gate, of this character, wherein the same can be readily opened or shut and in which the gate will automatically latch when in closed position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a gate of this character, which is hinged or swingingly supported in a novel manner and which possesses simplicity of construction, strength and durability, efficiency in its purpose and one which will embody a structure inexpensive to manu facture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features in construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with the invention, closed.
Fig. 2, is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3, is a fragmentary vertical sectional View at the hinged end of the gate.
Fig. 4, is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters represent corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawings, A designates generally, the gate proper, while the refer ence characters 12 and 13 indicate the hinge and latch posts of the gate respectively. The gate proper consists of a plurality of Specification of Letters Patent.

horizontally disposed bars 5 arrangedin parallel relation and connected at one end by a pair of uprights 7 disposed against the opposite sides of the bars. Attheir opposite ends, the bars 5 are connected by a pair of uprights 8 which are also secured to the opposite sides of the bars. Between the uprights 7 and 8, the bars 5 have uprights 6 attachedthereto for the purpose of suitably strengthening the structure.
The uprights 8 are considerably longer than the uprights 7, extending above the uppermost bar 5 and secured between the upper ends of the uprights 8 there is a brace 9 which extends diagonally and which has its lower end fastened to one of the uprights 7 and to the lowermost longitudinal bar 5 at one side of this bar, the fastening of the brace at this point being accomplished through the medium of a reinforcing'plate 10. This most bar 5 and the brace 9. This brace 9 is also bolted to the uppermost bars 5 as indicated at 11. The'brace thus serves to support the outer end of the gate proper and prevents sagging.
Suitably anchored in the ground at opposite sides of the roadway, are the vertical gate hinge and latch posts 12 and 13 respectively, the hinge post being of greater length than the latch post, and as usual, between these posts is arranged the gate proper A. Mounted in the hinge post 12, transversely thereof and adjacent to its ends are upper and lower eye-bolts 14, having threaded thereon lock nuts 15, which engage with opposite sides of the post 12 and adjustably secure the eye-bolts 14 in said posts. Mounted on the lowermost longitudinal bar 5 of the gate A, and on the upper end of the brace 9, are'the upper and lower angle and straight hinge plates 16 and 17, respectively, which are adapted to be disposed inwardly of the eye bolts 14, and loosely passed through these plates 16 and 17, and the eyes of the eye bolts 14 is a pintle rod 18. This rod 18 has engaged therethrough outside of the eye bolts 14, cotter pins 19, which cotter pins fasten the rod 18 against displacement, the rod being designed to swingingly connect the gate between the posts as will be apparent, so that said gate can swin to open position on either side thereof. his
plate 10 has a bolt 11 engaged therethrough and through'the uprights 7,
particular mounting of the gate prevents any possible sagging thereof.
The latch post 13 has upper and lower notches 20 cut in its inner face transversely of the post, these notches opening through the side faces of the post. In each notch there is secured a keeper plate 21 with itsplate, centrally of its lower edge there is formed a niche 22.
Between the uprights 7 there are pivoted upper and lower latch members 24 which extend both inwardly and outwardly beyond these uprights the inner ends of the latch members being connected by a vertical link 25 provided with a hand grip 26. By means of this link, the latch members may he moved upon their pivots to shift their outer ends downwardly, this being accomplished by upward movement of the link, Under normal circumstances the weight of the link will hold the inner ends of the latch members depressed and their outer ends elevated. These latch members are so located at their outer extremities will engage. in the niches 22 of the keeper plate 21 when the gate is in closed position and the outer ends of the latch member are elevated, thus holding the gate locked.
When it is desired to open the gate, the link is elevated toshift the outer ends of the latch members downwardly and disengage them from the niches 22. The gate may then be opened. The link is then releasedand the outer ends of the latch members raised. The gate may be then swung to closed position, when the outer ends of the latch members will engage the convex lower edges 23 of the keeper plate and be depressed until the latch members register with the niches 22 when they will move upwardly into the niches and latch the gate.
WVhat is claimed is:
In a gate, the combination with a hinge post, eyes carried by the hinge post near its upper and lower ends, and a pintle r engaged in the eyes; of the gate proper consisting of horizontal bars and upright-s secured against opposite faces of the bars, those at the inner end of the gate extending above the uppermost bar, a brace secured between the upper ends of the last mentioned uprights, said brace being disposed diagonally and having its lower end secured to the lower outer corner of the gate, aehinge plate secured along the bottom of the lowermost bar, and a hinge plate se' cured to the upper end of the brace and passing over the longer uprights, said hinge plates being engaged with the pintle rod,
for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I- affix my signa ture, 1n thepresence of two Witnesses.
