UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HARKINS, OF MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA.
HAT.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,350, dated September 5, 1893.
Application filed January 3. 1891. Serial No. 376.825. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HARKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menlo Park, in the county of San Mateo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats and Caps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
My invention relates to improvements in hats, caps, and the like and it consists in a new article of manufacture hereinafter described and claimed.
The improvements will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which the ligure is a perspective view of a hat constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring by letter to the said drawing: A, indicates the side or Wall of a hat which may be of straw, felt or other material and may be either sti or soft as desirable. At intervals in the side or wall A, adjacent the top of the hat, I form Ventilating openings B, which are preferably elongated horizontally as illustrated and are of a proportional size, approximately as illustrated. Preferably formed integral with the hat and extending horizontally from the flat disk like topV or crown thereof is a shelter flange C, which serves to prevent rain, sunshine, &c., from entering the hat through the openings B, before described. By the construction described it will further be perceived that while the ange C, serves eectually to prevent rain and sunshine entering into the hat, it does not in any manner interfere with the ventilation by impedin g the entrance of the air through the openings B.
I am aware that it has been proposed to v make a hat with Ventilating holes around the `top and flange turned downward covering said holes, and I do not claim such a structure for in my hat the top projects straight outwardly and' does not turn out of the horizontal plane. By my construction the holes are not only left free for ventilation and sheltered entirely from sunshine and rain, but the hat itself can be readily cleaned and brushed when desired, while in the structure above referred to, the flange turned downward not only prevents a ready circulation of air, but it also prevents the cleaning of the hat underneath the portion covered by the flange, and as sediment, dust, &c., collect in the space between the flange and the hat, such accumulation tends to stop the ventilation.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
As a new article of manufacture, a hat or cap having a flat disk like top projecting horizontally beyond the sides of said hat or cap at all points, said sides provided near the top thereof with a series of Ventilating holes extending entirely around the same, and sheltered by the projecting fiat top, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES HARKINS.
