H. B. OWEN; TRUCK.
P'a ten tedjAug. 29,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY B. OWEN, OF MANCHESTER, VIRGINIA.
TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,982, dated August 29, 1893.
I Application filed February 25 1893. erial No. 463.720- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LHARRY B. OWEN, a resident of Manchester, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'lrucks;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvem'entin trucks and more particularly to such as are adapted for carrying tobacco, the object being to construct a truck in such manner that tobacco can be conveyed from one room to another for drying, ordering or for other purposes.
A further object is to provide a truck for conveying leaf tobacco from place to placein atobacco factory, which shall'be simple in construction, easy to manipulate and effectual in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out view.
A represents a frame comprising a base 01.,
'posts I), cross bars 0 and connecting bars or strips d. The corner posts b are suitably braced by means of brace rods e, which are secured at one end to said posts andat the other end to the base a. The connecting bars or strips (1 are secured to the posts I) and run (preferably) longitudinally of the truck. Said connecting bars or stripsd are provided with notchesf, the notches of one bar being in alignment with the notches of the diametrically opposite bar and are intended for the reception of the sticks g on which the tobacco is strung. By notching the bars cl which support the sticks carrying the tobacco, one stick of tobacco is prevented from sliding on the bars at and coming into contact with the adjacent stick of tobacco, and thus the sticks of tobacco are at all times maintained separated from each other.
At diametrically opposite sides of the center of the base a, blocks or brackets h are secured thereto, in which block or brackets rollerse' are mounted. At the respective ends of the base a and preferably in line with the longitudinal axis thereof, blocks or brackets j are pivotally connected, in which pivoted blocks or brackets rollers k smaller than the rollers 'i are mounted. When the truck is made to travel in a straight line, it will be supported on the rollers z', but when it is desired to guide the truck, one end or the other thereon is tilted somewhat so as to cause one of the rollers is carried by the pivoted blocks or brackets j to run on the floor, whereby the truck may be guided in either direction at will.
The truck constructed and arranged as above set forth is very simple, can be easily manipulated, is cheap to manufacture and is effectual, in all respects, in the performance of its functions.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A truck for carrying tobacco consisting of a superstructure comprising base, corner posts, side bars and end cross bars, said superstructure mounted on end and side wheels, the end wheels in ahigher plane than the side wheels, substantially as set forth.
2. A truck for carrying tobacco consisting of a-superstructure comprising base, corner posts, side bars and end cross bars, said su perstructure mounted on end and side wheels,
the end wheels pivotally connected with the superstructureand located in a higher plane than the side wheels, substantially as set forth.
3. A truck for carrying tobacco comprising a superstructure mounted on wheels, the superstructure comprising a base, corner posts side bars and end cross bars having notched upper edges and removable strips held in the notches, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY B. OWEN.
