BROOM AND MOP HEAD.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,352, dated October 10, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, E. J. GREEN, of Valparaiso, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Broom and Mop Head; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the head when closed and clamping the material of which the broom or mop is composed, and Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the head when it is opened or spread to receive the material of which the broom or mop is to be made.

Similar letters of reference, where they oc our in the separate figures, denote like parts ofthe broom or mop head in both of the drawlugs.

I am aware that many kinds of metal heads for brooms and mops have been made, but they are generally, it'not universally, made each for its special use-that is to say, it is a broomhead or a mop-head, and notapplicablc to both uses or purposes. They are, moreover, as heretofore constructed, complicated and not easily operated except by mechanics skilled in the business, (I refer more particularly to the broom-heads,) while they are to be used by those not skilled in the use of such implements as are necessary to put them together or to take them apart. Another objection to the present broom-heads consists in the fact that they are composed of several pieces, the loss, breakage, or misplacement of a single one of which destroys the whole head; and, besides, the device for fastening the head to the handle is often a separate piece or pieces, and liable to loss or misplacement, and a similar consequence.

In my mode of constructing broom or mop heads I use but two pieces in forming the clamps, frame, and fastenings, including the device for fastening the head to the broom or mop handle.

Myinvention consistsin two skeleton frames or sections, so made that they may move one upon the other, and one shut within the other, each section having cast or wrought with or on it a semi screw shank, so fitted and arranged as that when the two sectional frames or clamps are brought together to clamp the material the two semi-screwshanks will also come together and form a whole screw-shank, which whole shank, when screwed into the broom or mop handle, holds everything firm and rigid.

I propose to make my broom or mop head of iron, cast or wrought, or parts of each, and for more ornamental ones brass or other similar metal may be used.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

A and B represent two sections or frames, made substantially alike, except that the lat ter, B, fits within the other, A, and is consequently alittleless in size and dimensions than the one, A, to admit' of this. The sections are composed substantially of a bow, a, with flanges b to give them strength, and with cross-bar c, uniting the ends of the bows, and,finally, witha semi-screw-shank, d, these parts being common to both sections, jaws, or parts. On the outer section, A, are cast or wrought two studs, pins, or projections, 0, one on each side, and on the inner section, B, are formed two recesses that will receive these pins, and thus guide the two sections when bringing them together to clamp the material that is to form the broom or mop. These pins or studs 6 also form fulcra for the sections to work upon when they are used as levers for tightly clamping the material between the cross bars or pieces 0. When the two sections are brought together the two semi-screwshanks d are also brought together, and prac tically form one screw-shank, which, when screwed into the handle, holds everything tight and firm.

hen the broom or mop is worn out the head is unscrewed from the handle, when the jaws or clamps are free to open and release the old and be furnished with new material, and be again closed and held by uniting it to the handle.

I prefer to have the pins or studs 6 as shown; but they may pass through the inner frame instead of into recesses in or on its edge, so as to form a permanent hinged or pivoted connection, and thus prevent the two sections from leaving each other, while they can swing far enough on the hinged or pivoted joint to open the jaws of the sections. Some guiding-connection should be made between the sections, so that when the semi-shanks d are being used as levers or handles to force the jaws or bars upon the material they are to clamp and hold the sections should not slip or get out of place.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A metallic broom or mop head composed of two sections;.and each section having a semiscrew-shank upon it, so that when the jaws or clamps of the sections are brought together the semi'screw-shanks will also be brought up against each other and form a whole screwshank, upon which a handle is screwed to hold everything tight and firm, substantially as described.
