SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,205, dated August 15, 1893. Application filed December 10, 1892. Serial No. 454,790. (No model.)

To all whom it may concer-n:

Beit known that I, DON C. EMERsoN,a citizen of the United-States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue- Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tongue supporters by means of which a supporter is provided being simple in construction, durable and cheap in first cost.

More particularly my invention relates to that class of tongue supporters, which are designed to be attached to the tongue of a reaper, mower and suchlile in such position thereon that the weight of the machine and tongue will be taken oft' from the horses necks and will equalize or resist violent movements of the tongue occasioned by the machine running over rough surfaces and will also assist in overcoming any tendency toward side draft of such machine.

My invention consists essentially of a vertically, adjustable bar provided with a suitable ground wheel and of a substantialframe work within which the vertically adjustable bar is carried and within which the same is adjusted by being carried through suitable vertical openings therein and of a spiral spring carried around the bar and Within the said frame Work within Which itis confined and J of an adjustable open collar carried upon the said bar and of a suitable bolt carried in the openings in the perforated ears of the said collar which clamps it upon the vertically adjustable bar and facilitates the easy adjustment of the said collar upon the bar to provide for different degrees of compression of the said spring to accommodate it to dierences of weight to be borne.

That my invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in Which--- Figure 1 shows my invention complete and attached to a tongue. Fig. 2 is a detailed View of the frame work carrying the vertically adjustable bar. Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the means of attaching the collar to the Vertical bar by means of the bolt.

In the drawings A, A', A relate to the parts of an open framework, which are all integral with the base A, which is attached to the tongue by means of suitable bolts, the said parts constituting a frame Work and is provided with a vertical opening in the bottom and top parts. `B, is a bar carried within the vertical openings in the said frame work, and is bifurcated at its lower portion and bears between its respective parts C, the wheel D, which is designed to bear upon the ground.

e is an open collar provided with outwardly tending perforated ears through which is carried the bolt e and is designed to be carried around and clamped upon bar B.

B, is a spiral spring carried around and upon the said bar B and is held within the open frame work bearing at its lower portion upon the collar e, and at its upper portion against the upper part of the open frame work.

In operation for the purpose designed, the complete device being rst attached in the manner shown, and the several parts of the device carried in their relative positions and adjustment, it will be seen that when from any cause the Weight of the machine is thrown upon the forward side of the axle the tendency to bear down upon the horses necks will be overcome by the resistance of the spring Y E, acting through the several parts of the device, but that the resistance will not be positive or abrupt because of the compressibility of the said spring; and it will further be seen that any tendency toward side motion will be overcome by resistance occasioned by .the contact of the wheel D with the ground.

As previously explained dierent degrees of compression or rather of compressibility of the spring may be had by the simple adjustment of the collar provided.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
