CAP FOR FILLING-NIPPLES OF LAMP-FOUNTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,926, dated August 8, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH J AUOH, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Im provement in Caps for the Filling-Nipples of Lamp- Founts; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken'in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in caps for the filling-nipples of lamp-founts, the

objects being to produce a simple and convenient device which, when closed, will not be discovered to be different from the ordinary screw-cap.

\Vith theseobjects in view, my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention, I secure a pin A, to the inner edge of the flange of a cap B, which is like the ordinary cap, except that the exterior surface of its flange is not threaded, but made plain. This cap fits into a nipple C, set into the top D, of the lampfount E, and also of ordinary construction,

except that it is not provided with an interior screw-thread. Thepin A,'before mentioned, is passed downward through the nipple near the edge thereof, and has bearing in the bent upper and lower ends f f, of a bracket F, made of a strip of sheet-metal, and as herein shown, secured to and depending from thelower edge of the nipple, in line with the pin. A spiral spring G, encircling the said pin, is interposed between the bent upper end f, of the bracket F, and a nut H, secured to the pin at a point above the bent end f of the said bracket. As thus arranged, the spring exerts a constant tendency to pull the pin and the cap downward.

In order to throw the cap into its open position for the purpose of filling the lamp, it is grasped by the fingers and lifted directly upward, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings, until the lower edge of its flange. is raised enough to clear the upper edge of the nipple. The cap is then swung around into the position in which it is shown by Fig. 6 of the drawings, turning on its pin as on a pivot, and ridingon the upper edge of the nipple. Then when it is desired to return the cap to its closed position, it is swung back over the nipple, and will be drawn down into place thereon, as soon as its flange is brought into full alignment with the opening of the nipple. It will be seen that the operation of opening and closing the cap is very simple, and that when the cap is in its closed position it will not be discovered to be difierent from the ordinary screw-cap, inasmuch as none of the parts which enable it to be opened and closed without removing it from the fount, are exposed.

I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at libert'yto make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. I am aware, however, that a filler-cap arranged to swing eccentrically to a nipple mounted in the top of a lamp-fount on a center located outside of the nipple and combined with a spring which constantly pulls it downward, is old. I am also aware that a box-cover has been arranged to operate on the same principle as the said fillercap, but on a spindle mounted in a bracket located within the opening of the box, the opening being obstructed by the bracket. I do not therefore, broadly claim a nipple or cover arranged to swing eccentrically and combined with a spring which tends to pull it toward its seat, but only my particular constrnction in which the bracket is located below the opening, and the spindle bears against one side thereof so that the same is practically unobstructed.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a lainp-fonnt, the combination with a filling-nipple set into the top thereof, of a cap adapted to fit into the said nipple, a pin secured to the said cap at or near the edge thereof, and extending downward through the nipple by the inner edge of the same, a bracket depending within the fonnt, below and in line with the edge of the nipple, and forming strncted by the bracket.
