UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. S. SEYMOUR, OF RAVENNA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT ON MILL-ROLLERS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,281, dated October 3, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. S. SEYMOUR, of Ra- .venna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sugar-Mill Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a mill to which is connected my improved roller. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the roller.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in the views.
My improvement relates to a roller for sugarmills, 850., made of clay, as a substitute for wood or metal, as hereinafter described. The frame A, and gearing B, together with the rollers G, of this mill, can be constructed in the ordinary way, as seen in Fig. 1.
The principal part of my invention is making the rollers of clay, instead of wood or metal, which is better, cheaper, and more durable than wood, and has been tested and found that they are equal to iron, without the objectionable features of oxidationattendant upon metal.
These rollers are compressed and molded into theform ofa common roller with a hole through the center, through which the shaft D passes. This shaft is cement-ed to the rollers, as at 0, or can be fastened in any desired manner. The rollers are molded, glazed, and baked until they are perfectly hardened, as ordinary stoneware. By being glazed the rollers are always kept clean, and they will not oxidate, as iron W. S. SEYMOUR.
