MARKING ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,712, dated. August 8, 1893.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W'. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maple Grove, in the county of Cherokee and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Marking Attachment for Plows, of which the following is a'specification.

My invention relates to an attachment for plows; the objects in view being to providea simple device with means for conveniently and adj ustably attaching the same to the stocks of plows, and adapted simultaneously with the forming of a furrow to accurately mark at a predetermined distance therefrom at elther side thereof, a line to be followed in the formation of the next succeeding furrow, whereby a uniformly-plowed field results.

With these and other objects in view, the lnvention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In illustrating my invention I have show the same in connection with an ordinary plow, the said plow being of well-known construction and not especially co-operating with the attachment, that is to say, a plow of any of the various patterns may be substituted, and

Upon the upper side of the stock or beam 1 there is secured an inverted U-shaped clip 5 bymeansiof bolts or screws 6 passed through perforations formed in opposite securingplates 7 in which the clip terminates. The clip has its upper side perforated and threaded, and in the perforation there is located a binding-bolt or screw 8. A bar 9 fits loosely within the clip 5, and is designed to be slid or adjusted therein and to be locked in any of its adjusted positions through the medium of the binding-bolt or screw heretofore mentioned,

which impinges at its lower end upon the upper side of said bar. Near its ends there de pend from the bar U-shaped clips or hangers 10, of any suitable form, and in these hangers there are loosely hung or supported depending marking-arms 11, the upper ends of said arms being bent to form eyes 12 for engaging the clips or hangers 10, and thelower ends of said arms reduced or pointed to form marking points 13. Staples 14 depend from the bar 9 a short distance from the clips or hangers 10, and in these staples are loosely connected the upper ends of a pairof strap-braces 15, whose lower ends are perforated and through which and the arms extend eye-bolts 16. T 0 each of the eye-bolts a chain 17 is connected, the said chains extending forward beyond the end of the plow-stock or beam where they terminate in books 18 that are designed to engage with a convenient link of the trace-chain of the barness, whereby draftisimpart-ed from the said trace-chains through the connecting chains to the marking-arms at the lower ends of the latter.

This completes the construction of the attachment, and the operation of the same in connection with a plow is as followszFor instance I would say the plowing is being carried on from left to right of a field,and when the first furrow is formed the adjusting-bar 9 will be adjusted or extended to the right of the plow so as to bring .the marking-arm at the right such a distance from the plow as will agree with the distance between the furrows to be formed. 4 The draft-chain is connected to a convenient link of the trace-chain of the harness, whereby the marking-arm is held perpendicular or nearlyso, while the draft-chain at the left of thexplow is disconnected from the trace-chain. As the plow moves over the field the marking-arm that is held perpendicular or rigid will take into the soil and score the same, thereby leaving a clear mark to be followed in the return plowing. When the end of the furrow is reached and the plow reversed or turned the set-bolt is loosened and the adj usting-bar set over to the left until its marking-arm is directlyover the mark or score previously made, when the bolt is retightened, the draft-chain of the left marking-arm connected with the trace chain and the chain at the opposite side disconnected from the trace-chain. The plow now starts back, the shovel being guided by the score or mark previously made; and-the ad ustmg-bar being shifted at the end of each furrow the required distance and set to form a new score or mark, so that when the field 1s completely plowed all the furrows will be at a uniform distance apart and exactly parallel throughout their lengths.

It will be seen that my invention is applicable to all the various styles of plows, and that by loosening the marking-arm that is not in actual operation, the same may swing back upon its hinge-like connection with the bar 9 when it contacts with the clods of the furrow ad acent thereto, whereby no breakage of the arm by reason of such contact is likely to occur.

Various constructions of connections between the marking-arms and bar 9 may be made, and also various means employed for ad usung in a ready manner the bar 9 and connecting it with the beam, all of which would suggest themselves to the skilled mechanic, and all of which are considered by me to be contemplated by my invention.

I-lavmg described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a plow, of a transyerse bar mounted adj ustably thereon, marking-arms depending from and hinged to the bar, and means for securing either of the arms in a rigid depending position with relation to the bar, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a plow, of a bar transversely-disposed with relation to and mounted on the beam, hinged marking-arms depending from the ends of the bar, and draftchains terminating in hooks secured to the arms and adapted to engage with the tracechains of a harness, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a beam of aplow, the inverted U-shaped clip bolted thereto and the binding-bolt passed through the clip, of the transverse bar having the depending clips 10 near its ends, the marking-arms terminating at their upper ends in eyes loosely engaging the clips and having their lower ends pointed, the staples depending from the bar at the inner sides of the clip, the strapbraces loosely connected with the staples, eyebolts passed through the lower end of the strap-braces and the marking-arms, chains connected to the eye-bolts, and trace-chainengaging hooks connected to said chains, substantially as specified.
