Be it known that I, PEEcivAL WALTER ST. GEORGE, of the city of Montreal, in the district ofMontreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have inventeda certain new and useful Improved Dirt or Garbage Receptacle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, A clear, and exact description of the same, and

85o., the objects in view being to provide a'de- Y vice of the classnamed which shall be simple and cheap in construction, and which shall be adapted for quick and convenient arrangement in a paved street; to provide for the use of cheaper material inqa portion of the construction thereof than metal; and to provide containing and `supporting devices in which an ordinary form of bucket may be used as a receiver.

Heretofore the construction of receptacles of this class has been such as to necessitate the use of metal in the main invorder to secure the proper attachment of all the parts, and, furthermore, all of the tops or caps,-with but few exceptions, have been madecircular,L thereby necessitating the cutting of the stones or flags or other paving blocks in order to pro duce a neat Workmanlike appearance. The exceptions to the circular tops above referred; to are found in the cases of squarebins hav-VIV ing both body and top'ofsquare form. This form of body-necessitates'the,use of metal'in its construction. The lower'or Vbody-portionV of my improved receptacle being unexposed: and not subject to blows or jars I prefer to, make of a material, such as tile sewer pipe, which is cheaper than metal, and therefore I prefer to make the body-portion in a round form. The cap or top portion, which fits in the pavement,-Withits upper-surface flush therewith, is, on the other hand, exposed to the jars and rough usage due tovtraffic, and hence, to make such part durable under this treatment, I preferably construct it of metal. Furthermore, to enable thereceptacle to be arranged in a pavement without the inconvenience of cutting the paving blocks, I make the cap in a rectangular or square shape,

whereby it may be fitted in a space formed by the removal of one or more paving blocks, as willbe clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings."

The container consists of a cylindrical bodyportion, 1, which may be asection of tile sewer pipe, and a hollow rectangular cap or box, 2, suitably secured to the upper end of the body portion, as hereinafter explained, and removable therefrom.V This cap or box is rectangular in shape to enable it to occupy and lill the space of an ordinary flag or tile in the pavement, with which its upper surface is iush. Thus, the material thrown into the device is prevented from droppinginto the container and accumulating therein. The receiver may be readily removed from the container for the purpose ot' discharging its contents, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The cover of the container is dat and is flush with the surface of the pavement, so as to form no obstruction. The boxlike cap is preferably a casting.

NVhat I claim is as follows:

I. In a street sweepings bin, the combination of a sunk cylindrically-shaped body section and a square head section, having its top flush with the sidewalk, and formed with downwardly projecting sides and a bottom and lugs adapted to iit over said cylindrical body section, such bottom having a circular opening in it to allow of the insertion of a removable bucket or receptacle.

2. The combination with a sunken cylindrical body-portion having an open upper end, of a detachable hollow rectangular cap provided with depending lugs or ears engaging the sides of said body-portion and having a horizontal bottom provided with a central circular opening surrounded by a horizontal supporting flange which extends inward over the top of the body-portion, a lid or cover closing the top of said cap, and a removable receiver fitting snugly in the said circular opening 1n the bottom of the cap and provided at its upper edge with an outstanding peripheral lip which lies upon the said supporting {iange to support the'receiver in the container, substantially as specified.
