SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 502,579, dated August 1, 1893. Application filed October 12, 1892. Serial No. 48,685- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DENNIS W. PALMER, of Hermon, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Combined Sofa, Table, and Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to furniture, and its object is to provide a new and improved combined sofa, table and bed, arranged in such a manner as to permit of conveniently and quickly changing the furniture to form a sofa, a table or a bed.

The invention consists of a frame having heads, each formed with a hinged section,'a table hinged to the said heads and adapted to form a back for the frame and also adapted to be supported on the said heads, and a bottom head in sections hinged together, one of the sections being also hinged to the frame.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front view of the improvement arranged as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same with parts in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the improvement arranged as a bed; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

The improvement is provided with a frame A comprising side rails A and A and heads A and A rigidly connected with the said side rails and formed with legs having casters as plainly shown in the drawings.

The board 0, is connected by two pairs of pivoted links, B and B, with such frame heads A A. One pair of links (B) is pivoted to the upper portions of said heads at a point between the transverse middle, or center, and the rear ends of the latter, whereas the other pair of links (B') is pivoted to the lower portions of the heads contiguous to their rear ends. The two sets of links are also pivoted to cleats O, on the inner side of the board 0, but at separated points,

as shown. This arrangement of the links enables the board, 0, to swing bodily over and come down upon the heads A Aas' shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3-to form atable, and also to hang supported vertically to form a back (see full lines Fig. 3), when the article of furniture is used as a sofa or bed. To adapt it for this latter purpose, the back, 0, is upholstered on its inner side, 0 It will be seen that the links H B permit the back 0 to hang as low as practicable, when vertical, and yet also adapt it to assume a symmetrical position relative to the frame, when placed horizontally. It will be seen that the upper set of links B may serve to control the position of andsupport the board C, independently of the lower links B, since, when the board is in vertical position, the links B rest on the bottoms of grooves, A formed in the tops of the heads A A. Grooves are also formed in the rear ends or sides of the latter to receive the lower links, B and grooves, 0 are formed in the cleats, C, to receive both pairs of links, so that they form no obstruction whatever when the board, 0, is in either position.

Between the heads A and A is arranged a bottom D made in two sections D and D adapted to be folded one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 3, or extended as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the said sections being for this purpose connected with each other by hinges D at their front ends. The rear of the section D is pivoted at its ends at D on the inside of the heads A and A of the frame A while the front of the said section is provided at its sides with fixed legs D adapted to rest on the front railA' of the frame A. A spring catch D held on the free end of the section D serves to fasten the latter onto the under side of the section D when the sections are folded up as shown in Fig. 3. By this arrangement sufficient room is furnished between the tops of the rails A and A and the under side of the section D to permit of folding and fastening the other section D under the section D in the frame A, as plainly shown in Fig. 3. When it is desired to extend the bottom D, then the sections are swung upward, turning on the pivots D to permit of swinging the section D from under the section D so as to extend the same horizontally in line with the other section D as plainly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

In order to support the outer or free end of the engaged section D legs D are pivoted to the section, the said legs being normally folded on the section, but are adapted to be swung downward and outward, as illustrated in Fig. 5, to support the free end of the section D from the floor in line with the legs of the heads A and A As the sections D and D are upholstered they form a straight horizontal upholstered surface when the sections are extended to produce a double bed.

In order to form heads for the extended section D I provide auxiliary heads E and E hinged at E and E to the front ends of the heads A and A so that the said auxiliary heads can be swung outward and extended in line with the heads A and A to form the heads for the section D Bolts F or other suitable locking devices may be employed to fasten the outer ends of the auxiliary heads E and E to the section D and also to fasten the said auxiliary heads to the other heads A and A at the time the said auxiliary heads are folded onto the frame heads, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

it will be seen that when the several parts are in the position illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the device forms a very convenient sofa, which can be readily changed to form a table by swinging the board 0 up on top of the heads A and A as previously described.

When it is desired to use the article as a double bed, the board 0 is swung into a vertical position, the section D is extended in line with the section D, the legs D are swung downward and forward to support the said section and the auxiliary heads E and E are extended outward in line with the heads A and A and locked to the section D as above mentioned.

It will further be seen that this device is very simple, durable in construction, and can be readily and conveniently changed to form either a sofa, bed or table.

Having thus fully describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, with the sofa having vertical frame heads A A, of the board, 0, having cleats, C, the pair of links B, which are pivoted to the cleats, and to the upper edges of the frame heads at points between the transverse middle and rear sides of the latter, and the links B, pivoted to the board cleats and the rear lower portions of said frame heads, whereby, when the board is in horizontal position, it rests on the frame heads and the links B lie nearly parallel to it, and the links B stand vertical, as specified.

2. A piece of furniture comprising a frame having heads each provided with a hinged auxiliary head, a board connected with the said frame heads by links and adapted to form a back or table for the said frame, and a bottom arranged in the said frame and made in sections hinged together, one of the sections being also hinged to the frame, substantially as shown and described.

3. A piece of furniture comprising a frame having heads each provided with a hinged auxiliary head, a board connected with the said frame beads by links and adapted to form a back or table for the said frame, a bottom arranged in the said frame and made in sections hinged together, one of the sections being also hinged to the frame, and legs held on one of the said sections to support the same when extended, as described.

4. In a piece of furniture of the class described,the combination with a frame having heads, of a bottom for the said frame and head in sections hinged together, one of the said sections being pivoted to the ends of the said frame, legs secured on the section hinged to the frame and adapted to rest on the rails of the latter, and aset of pivoted legs held on the other section, substantially as shown and described.

5. A piece of furniture comprising a frame having heads each provided with a hinged auxiliary head, a board connected with the said frame heads by links and adapted to form a back or table for the said frame, a bottom arranged in the said frame and made in sections hinged together, one of the sections being also hinged to the frame, legs held on one of the said sections to support the same when extended, and locking devices for fastening the said auxiliary heads to the frame heads or to the outermost bottom section, substantially as shown and described.
