BLIND-STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,362, dated August 1, 1893.
Application filed October 29, 1892. Serial No. 450,400. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WHARToN HOSKINs, of Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blind-Slat Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nature of a device for adjusting and locking the slats of window blinds in any position desired for the purpose of regulating the light, and to prevent the rattling and wear and tear on the slats, and to lock the slats so that they cannot be opened from the outside at all.
It consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the device hereinafter fully described which is at once simple, cheap, easily applied, and easily operated, without the use of set screws or other parts that are liable to become detached and lost.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shutter with the fastener applied to the slat strip of the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the slats and the case of the fastener, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the notched segment and its locking detent.
In the drawings A represents the slat strip which is connected as usual by a small staple to each one of the slats S, which are provided with pivotal ends that turn in sockets in the frame ofthe shutter. To the end of the strip A is fastened by screws Z a short metal bar 6 which enters a slot in the semi-circular case 0, and is pivoted at d to a toothed segment B. This segment 13 is hinged or pivoted at its center 0 to the case and swings up or down in the same. The outer periphery of this segment is notched or toothed and these notches are continued over the extensions 1) b at the ends of the segment. These notches are adapted to receive the tooth h of a curved latch or detentf which is fulcrumed near its middle to the outer side of the case 0, and curves around the same so as to conform closely to the shape of the case and be out of the way. The case O is provided with screw holes a a formed in flanges upon its opposite sides by which it is fastened to the shutter frame in line with the strip A, and the shutter frame is recessed at 7c is to receive the ends I) Z) of the segment when thrown to an extreme position in either direction. The tooth h of the latch or detent passes through an opening in the case 0, which it closely fits, so that strain is taken off the axis of the detent.
The notches in the segment have parallel sides and are tapered outwardly at the top to form wedge shaped teeth at the outer edge. This permits the tooth h of the detent to readily enter and tightly lock in the bottom of the notch, to prevent all looseness and rattling. To hold the tooth h firmly to place with an elastic pressure, a springj is arranged between the detent and the case upon the opposite side of the fulcrum from the tooth.
To operate this device it is only necessary to press upon the end '11 of the detent so as to throw the tooth of the detent out of the notches of the segment,and then move longitudinally the slat strip A to the desired position to adjust the slat, the detent immediately locking the segment and slat strip in this position by reason of its spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The blind slat fastening consisting of the inclosing case 0, the notched segment-B contained Within and pivoted to the inner edge of the inclosing case, the bar 6 pivoted directly to the segment at a point remote from the center, and a spring latch or detent pivoted to the outside of the case and Working through the same into the notches of the segment substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the semi-circular case 0, the curved spring-actuated detent ful crumed to the same upon the outside and having a tooth passing through to the interior, a swinging notched segment pivoted within the case, and a connecting bare, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the notched segment having extensions 12 b at its ends, the case O pivotally connected to and inclosing the segment, the curved latch or detent f having tooth h and spring t' and fulcrumcd upon the outside of the case, and the connecting bare extending through a slot in the case substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with the shutter frame recessed at 7t 7a, the pivoted slats S, and slat strip A; of the bar a, segment B, case 0, and detent f, substantially as shown and described.
