SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,827, dated July 18, 1893.

Application filed April 12, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HOSEA BALLOU CRAN- DALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Ohautau qua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bed-bottoms, and more especially to that class thereof in which the bottoms are formed of canvas.

The objects of the invention are to provide a cheap and simple construction of this class of bed-bottom, and to include therein a convenient and efficacious means for maintaining said bottom in a stretched condition or taut, thus always rendering the same comfortable and preventing any unsightly and uncomfortable sagging.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead, the same having a bed-bottom therein constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bed-bottom frame, the canvas removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, the canvas in position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In constructing the bed-bottom I employ opposite transverse end strips 1, the strips being provided near their opposite ends with openings 2, the same being located near the upper edges of the strips. The strips are further provided at their centers and near their lower edges with openings 3. Apair of rollers 4. have their opposite ends reduced to form bearing-trunnions 5 which take into the openings 3 and connect the two opposite endstrips 1, the said trunnions being maintained within the bearing-openings 2 by any suitable means, in this instance, by ordinary linchpins 6.

tion, though if desired it may be cylindrical. This roll is preferably of metal and has its ends reduced to form cylindrical trunnions 8 which take into the bearing-openings 3 of the end-strips 1. The roll 7 between its bearingends 8 is provided with a series of perforations 9, and through these securing wires 10, or other fastening devices, are passed, said wires or devices being passed through the meeting edges of a canvas bed-bottom 11. The canvas bed-bottom 11 is continuous, passes over the rolls 4, and under the same where, as before stated, it is attached to the winding or take-up roll 7.

The winding or take-up roll 7 is provided immediately beyond the ends of the canvas bed-bottom With perforations 12, and in each perforation there is mounted a curved Winding-lever 13, the same being loose within the perforations for a purpose hereinafter apparent. In order to take up slack in the canvas bottom it is simply necessary to rotate the levers, thus winding the slack upon the central winding or take-up roll 7, and when sufficiently tight to slide the lovers so that their ends will take under one of the adjacent rolls 4, which will prevent a retrogression or backward movement of the take-up roll and hence any looseness in the bottom.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that I have provided an exceedingly cheap, convenient, and efiectivc bed-bottom of the canvas style, and have provided means for maintaining the same comfortably taut; and, furthermore, that said means are exceedingly durable and not liable to become Worn or impaired by use.
