SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,699, dated July 18, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY TRINDER; a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of Worcester and S ate of Massachusetts, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Lasts, of which the fol;

lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, and in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a last embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the last with the block removed. Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the block and Fig. 5 is a side view of the last with the block removed and showing the position assumed by the last as it is being withdrawn from the boot.

My invention relates to an improvement in lasts and it has for its object, to provide a last which can be readily withdrawn from the boot, or shoe.

Referring to the drawings, A denotes the heel section and B the toe section, together forming the body of the last and O the block; the body of the last and block 0 being of the usual form of lasts now in common use. The body of the last formed of the separate sections A and B are united by bar D provided with a hinge-joint D at its center and at each end with the prongs E, E, entering holes in the heel and toe sections of the last. The bar D is provided with a stirrup F, to receive the prong G, provided with a flattened head G,

which is attached to the block 0 by screws G The under side of the block 0 is provided with a groove H, in order to receive the bar D, and the prong G is attached to the block 0 in suitable position to pass through the stirrup F, and rest uron the upper edge of the bar D when the book 0 is placed in position so the prong G will bear upon both sections of the hinge bar and hold the heel and toe sectionsA and B in close contact at I making the body of the last rigid when the block 0 is in position.

I have shown the bar D as fastened in position by wires J, J, extending through the body of the last; butother methods can obviously be employed for attaching the hinged bar to the body of the last.

I am aware that lasts have heretofore been made in sections to enable them to be more readily withdrawn from the boot, and also that the sections of a last have been hinged together and I do not claim such broadly; but.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

I. The combination in a last having heel and toe sections A and B and a block 0, of a hinge bar D uniting said heel and toe sections and provided with a stirrup F and a prong Gr attached to said block and passing through said stirrup, whereby said block is held in position and said hinge bar is rendered rigid, substantially as described.

2. The combination in a last, of a heel section A, toe section B, hinged-bar D provided with prongs E, E, entering holes in said heel and toe sections and having a stirrup I a block 0 grooved to receive said bar and a prong G attached to said block and passing through said stirrup, substantially as described. I
