SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 501,505, dated July 18, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HANS M. HANSEN, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object the provision of improvements in the construction of the uppers of boots and'shoes, whereby comparatively small pieces of stock may be utilized, wastage avoided, and at the same time a neat and serviceable shoe produced.

The invention consists of avamp blank for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes in which a piece or section has been removed for the insertion of the instep pieces or parts, the said removed section being vase-shaped or of substantially vase-form, with the lines at the neck meeting or nearly meeting, whereand graceful lines are obtained in the makeup of the shoe, all as I will proceed to describe in detail and point out with particularity in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings, and the letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

In the drawings a designates the heel and b is the sole of a boot or shoe, which is herein shown to be of the Congress type, though so far as my invention extends, it might as well be of the button, lace, or low quarter kind or class.

At the same time a graceful and sightly curve is given to the upper edge of the vamp, extending as it does from or about the ankle, on each side,,forward and downward to the ball of the foot, whence it curves inward and extends across the latter.

The instep portion 6 of the shoe may be made of a single piece as shown in Fig, 2, or it may be made of two pieces united by a seam 6o fas shown in Fig. 1, or instead of the seamf the two parts may be laced or buckled, in the v usual way of constructing lace and buckle shoes.

The advantages arising from my invention are that I am not only enabled to make a most shapely shoe, graceful in outline and well adapted to fit thefoot of the wearer, by making the several parts of separate and distinct pieces, but the invention permits me to employ and utilize comparatively small pieces of stock in the construction of a desirable 8c shoe, which have heretofore been unavailable.

Furthermore, I am enabled by my invention to distribute the stock, as to quality, throughout the structure of the shoe to suit the requirements of wear. For example, I may put the most lasting and wear withstanding material in the vamp, which is the first part of the upper to give out. The next lowest grade of stock may be put in the quarters, and quite soft easy-feeling material may be employed in the instep part.

It is to be understood that my invention is not confined to a Congress shoe 'as herein shown, but may be employed in connection with a lace, or button shoe, or a low-quarter 9 5 shoe, or any shoe adapted for use by women, misses or children, or men, youths or boys.
