Be it known that I, PASCAL J. SHAMPAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boilers for Boiling Garments in Laundries, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in boilers for boiling garments in laundries, and in provision for heating the same and rendering them portable, the object of my invention being to obviate the presence of furnaces, stoves, and consequent heat and avoid the Wetting and rendering of the floors slippery, and to provide for a convenient location of the boiler when in actual use or out of use, as the case may be. V

Letters A and 13., represent the wall and ceiling of a compartment.

0, represents the brackets which support a single rail or track D, upon which the wheels- E, E, travel. The boiler H, is provided with a bail F, and with a cover G. The bail F, is supported by the wheels E, by means of arms a, which are pivotally connected with the wheels E, and which are swiveled at i. The bail F, supports the boiler pivotally by means of screws or rivets near the center of the ends of said boiler, as shown at f, c.

Beneath the bottom of the boiler H, is located an ordinary gas tube K, with perforations in the upper side thereof, and having a jet or tip h, to which may be connected the flexible gas pipe L, which connects with the ordinary jet or gas connection in the wall or ceiling of thecompartment. Upon the left end of the boiler is attached a plate N, in which there is a circular slot 6. Within this slot is located the head of a small rivet or bolt having a screw thread upon its exterior end, and on which is screwed the thumb-screw (I, this pivot or rod passing through an opening in the lower extremity of the bail F, and by means of which the boiler may be locked and held in any given position. The upper lip of the boiler is provided with a ledge I, which projects outwardly and above the main walls of the boiler.

The cover for the boiler is made in conical shape, as shown in the drawings, but of course may be made in any shape so that its center portion is higher than its edges. It is provided with a flange g, which enables it to fit closely within the body of the boiler; and it is alsoprovided with catches f,f, they being pivotally connected so that they can be caused to engage with the projecting ledge of the boiler I, and can be turned around upon their respective pivots, releasing the engagement and enabling the cover to be taken off. Within the same room or compartment are placed one or more rinsing tubs M.

It is well known that in laundry rooms Where washing is conducted there are required either furnaces or stoves for heating the boilers in which the clothes are to be washed, and that the heat generally, especially during the warmer seasons, is almost unendurable to the operators; also, that the boilers containing the clothes have to be removed from the furnace or stoves and carried to the rinsing tubs and emptied, and then carried back to their heating place; that in these and other operations water is spilled upon the floor, which becomes sloppy, wet and unhealthy, and also in the operation of boiling the clothes the ebullition in the boiler causes water to overflow and wet and soil the floors. By my invention I overcome these difficulties by heating the boiler from gas jets placed beneath it. The presence of ranges or stoves or grates is obviated by the peculiar construction of my boiler. The overflow and slopping just mentioned are prevented, and by placing my boiler and causing it to travel upon the track G, I am enabled to place it in the most convenient portion of the room during the process of heating. And when the batch of clothes are to be emptied into the rinsing tub, the track is so constructed as to lead it to that position for that purpose, and after it has discharged its contents into the rinsing tub it is again filled'with water and clothes, to be washed, and moved out of the way and the rinsing proceeds while another batch of clothes is be ing boiled.

Of course in the movement of the boiler'H,

the flexible tube L, may be removed and the gas connection severed or not, depending upon the distance, and the length of the flexible pipe L.

Having thus described my invention and mode of operation, I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent as follows:

1. In a washing device for a laundry the combination between a permanent track or rail with its supports and a wash boilertraveling upon said rail by wheels conforming thereto, said boilerbeing provided with means for heating the same connected with the bottom thereof and having connections with a permanent gas supply, and means for supporting said boiler, pivotally connecting the ends of said boiler to said wheels all as substantially shown.

2. In a washing device in a laundry-room, the combination of a rail or track with its permanent supports with a wash boiler provided with a bail in which said boiler is pivotally supported, swiveled arms connecting said bail and one or more wheels traveling upon said rail or track, and a gas heater fixed to the bottom of said boiler and having connectinns with a permanent gas supply, all as substantially shown.

3. In a washing devicefor laundriesa boiler provided with a bail pivotally attached to the ends of said boiler and a locking device upon one end thereof whereby the bail may be fixed in any given position with reference to said boiler, a gas tube attached to the bottom of said boiler with perforations and having a tip or jet for connection with the gas supply, said boiler also, provided at its upper edges with projecting ledges or flanges; and a domelike cover with edges adapted to meet and fit into the main walls of said steam boiler and having means for locking the same in position, all as substantially shown.
