L'AuNniaRiNcv This.' j
Y 'Applicationalediiiiprii 13,
Be it known that I, Rosn KowALczUK, a` citizenoffoland, residing at Buffalo, in the countyof Erie and'State'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laundering Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to laundering tubs and more particularly to improvements in tubs especially intended for domestic use in the boiling of clothes. The principal object is to provide a tub in which the water may be maintained at boiling temperature but the escape of steam, both while the clothes are being boiled Vand while they are being removed, is substantially eliminated, thereby promoting the comfort and `con venience of the laundress and aiding the sanitary condition of the basement or laundry room. A further object is to provide a tub which,'along with the above stated advantage, y Vmay, in draining, serve incidentally for the vention. f
Apipeto which the other tubs of the group effective flushing and cleaning of the drain' may be connected. Y
With the above objects in View, the invention consists generally Yin the combination with the tub of a burner, a .movable lid or cover, a means of water supply controlled externally of the tub and means for distributing the water uniformly over the area of the tub.l The invention consists'further in certain details of structure and arrangement which will bepointed out as the del" scription proceeds.
A boiling tub in which the features of the invention are incorporatedisillustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein: Y
Y Figure l is an elevation showing a group. of laundry tubs and at the right end thereof a boiling tub in accordance with the in- Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the lid or cover. y f f j Figure. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3.-3 of Figure2. v Y Similarcharacters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views. The improved boiling tub is preferably one of the group of stationary-tubs such as I form a partrof the euipment ofzrnodernV laundry basements, an is so shown,*but itv may, of course, .y e constructed as a" separate Y and independent unit, Y e
According to the invention, they boiling- 192e. seiai "N6, 373,575.
tom, so` as to impart 4the requisite "heatf thereto, a "burner 2 of suitable construction, `ie.,
tub, asil, has below it :and-close 5to itsbotf j a gas or electric burner.'y Said-tub'is'alsol I provided with a lid -or cover 3 which may Abe removed to disclose 'the contents of the tuband enable theremoval of the clothes after boiling. arranged above the` cover 3. and in the. embodiment shown, vwhere the tub is stationary,
A source of water supply is consists ofl themusual water service pipe 4` and spigot 5.
In the construction preferred, provision l :Y i .is made for delivering the water to the tub kwhile the cover 3 is closed and for causing the water, as delivered," to be 'distributed substantially over thegarea of thetubf- For vthis purpose the cover 3 carries, adjacent',
its underface, a Vsuitable water distributing" f device 6 provided with a nipple 7 which projects through said cover and is connectedv externally, as by a removable hose section 8,
to the spigot 5, The device 61may with ad' vantage consist'of' a tubular ring provided throughout its extent with closely associated. perforations through which the water is dis- Y charged'in numerous small jets' and in all'.
directions. v
The tub l is' provided with an outletV pipe 9 which where, as shown and preferred, the
tub forms one of a group of stationary tubs,
may mon to the group.
be connected to thel drain pipe 10, com` e In use, the cover 3 is removed and thetub I l is filled to the kdesired level with cold water from the spigot 5. The clothes are then put in the' tub and the cover 3 i'sclosed, thehose section 8 being then fitted to' the nipplev l.
7 and spigot 5.v The burner 2 is then ignited to heat the vwater and the-cover A3 prevents the escape of steamwhenthe water attains boiling temperature. c When the ,clotheshave been boiled sufficiently long, the burner 2 is 'cut off and the spigot 5 is operated fora momentary intervalto supply 'asmallvol- .1100 '.ume of cold water to the device 6 which 'disi tributes it substantially over the area of the y i tub'. This cold water forms alayer lorilm s on the surface, of the boiling` water without Vsubstantially reducing itsb temperature Yand suchlayer-or film 4of cold water'is efectiVe fio'f steam escaping, in appreciable measure,
lt'o'absorb or blanket the steam. The cover Y from the tub', whereupon the clothesmay bte/.1120Y son removedor transferred to another tub for a ldifferent operation suoli as rinsing or bluing.v In connection with the removal of the deposits which may have been Carried over with the Water from the other tubs.
VVihen not desired for .use as a boiling tub,
y in the manner described7 the tub l may be used in the same Way as the remaining, and usual, laundry tubs, Y
kIIaving fully described my" invention, I claim: i
The combination of a tub in which Water l may be maintained'at lboiling temperature, a movable lid by which said tub lmaybe closed7 and means Within the Vtub for so distributingcold Water that in a momentary interval it will form a thin'stratum upon the boiling Water and substantially over the area of the tub. Y l i In testimony whereof I have aixed signature. u
