SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,302', dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed December 7. 1892. Serial No. 454,352. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, OTTO SCHROEDER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tobacco pipes, and has for its object to provide means for effectnally preventing the entrance of saliva into the pipe bowl or the drawing up of liquid nicotine into the mouth of the smoker, and also to provide means for partially arresting or retarding the passage of the smoke through the stem,where by the separation of the nicotine from the smoke is facilitated, and to these ends my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and `.afterward definitely pointed out in the claim, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal, central section of my improved pipe; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the stem; Figs. et and 6 perspective views of the nipples, and Fig. 5 a plan view of the baffle plate.
Referring to the drawings, the letter B indicates the pipe bowl, C the stem, and F the mouthpiece. \^The stem C consists of a thin metallic tubular shell interiorly screw-threaded at its opposite ends, and preferably tapering from the'bowl toward the mouthpiece. The nipple B is of the same diameter as the stem C, and is screw-threaded at one end to screw into the same stem, and at its opposite end is provided with a reduced boss thatv screws into a corresponding screw-threaded aperture in the pipe bowl. The nipple B'is provided with a central longitudinal smoke passage and with a small inwardly projecting tube ZJ. The nipple E is similar in construction to the nipple B and is provided with an inwardly projecting tube e. As thus constructed, any saliva that may run down into the stem is prevented from escaping into the bowl by means of the large diameter of the stem O and the small diameter of the inwardly projecting tube h, forming in effect a trap. The nipple E performs a similar function in preventing any liquid nicotine from running into theniouth of the smoker.
In order to retard the passage of the smoke through the stem I insert therein a removable baffle plate D formed of thin sheet metal and preferably in the form of a disk-whose periphery is provided with a series of notches to permit the passage. therethrough of the smoke. This form of baffle plate also causes the smoke to pass in intimate contact with the interior surface of the thin sheet metal stem C, whereby it aids in cooling the smoke. By making the stem tapering, the baffle plate D may be dropped therein and will be re tained in place by friction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a tobacco pipe, the combination with the bowl and mouthpiece, of the stem consisting of the tapering thin tubular shell C provided with a removable baffle plate D, consisting of a disk having a notched periphery, and the nipples B and E having central smoke passages and tubes h and e of less diameter than the inner diameter of the shell Gand projecting therein in opposite directions, said nipples being also provided with screw-threaded bosses for engaging the bowl and mouthpiece, substantially as shown and described.
