Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS v.ALL1s, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BARBED FENCING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,129, dated July I l, 1893.
Applilmtiml filed October 2 1892- Serial No. 449,947. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS V. ALLIs, a citizen of the United States and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Fencing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the kind of barbed fencing which consists of a plain flat strip having integral barbs at intervals along one edge projecting in the'plane of the strip and such as is produced from a wider blank strip slitted along the middle portion in a manner to make two barbed strips with economy of labor and material, and it consists of such strips made with a notch preferably of like form and dimensions as that of the barbs in the same edge midway between the barbs, the width of the strip being as much greater thereat as the depth of the notch and tapering therefrom to the base of the barbs, the object being to provide barbed fencing of more ornamental character, all as hereinafter fully described reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a plan view of part of a barbed strip of my improved fencing. Fig. 2, is a side view of part of a strip of the said improved fencing twisted.
a, represents the fencing strip; the said strip a has integral shaped barbs 0, projecting from one edge in the plane of the rest of the strips, and notches (1, intermediate of the barbs, said barbs being represented in this instance about fourtimes the distance apart'they are usually placed in this kind of fencing, and the strip about double the Width at the notches that it is at the base of the barbs and tapering on the notched and barbed edge from the notches to the barbs by the di agonal lines 6; the notches are preferably of like form and dimensions asthe barbs. The barbs may be closer together if desired. At the bottom of each notch is a short longitudinal slit f, the purpose of which is to lessen the tendency of the strip to break thereat by tensile stress, and to favor uniformityof twist.
Thus I provide an improved simple article of fencing combining the barbed and ornamental features better suited for localities wherea milder form of barbed fencing is sufficient and ornamentation is desirable.
I claim- 1. The improved fencing strip having barbs at interval-s along one edge and notches intermediate of said barbs, the strip being widest midway between the barbs and tapering therefrom to the barbs substantially as described.
2. The improved fencing strip having barbs at intervals along one edge and notches intermediate of said barbs, the strip being widest midway between the barbs and tapering therefrom to the barbs and also being twisted substantially as described.
3. The improved fencing strip having barbs at intervals along one edge and notches intermediate of said barbs, with longitudinal slits at the bottom of the notches, said strip being Widest midway betweenthe barbs and tapering therefrom to the barbs substantially as described.
Signed at New York city, in the county and State of New York, this 24th day of October, A. D. 1892.
