Description

UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE.
DANIEL R. J OSLYN, OF GURDON, ARKANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING;
SPEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,076, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed April 1, 1893. Serial'No. 468.640. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL R. J OSLYN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gurdon, in the county of Clark and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Car- Ooupling, of which the foilowing is aspecification.
The invention relates to improvements in car couplings.
The object of the present inventien is to improve the Construction of car couplings, to simpiify their Construction, and to enable them to comple automatically and to be readily uncoupled from the sides of the car, thereby obviating the necessity of going between cars 'either in coupling or uncoupling.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is an end elevation of a car coupling constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a reverso plan view. Fig. 3 isa longitudinal sectional view.
Like numerais of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
1 designates a draw-head having in its bottom a longitudinal Opening 2, communicating with its link cavity 3 and receiving a hook 4:, which is pivoted at its rear end and which works upward through the slot or Opening 2 and is adapted to engage aiink 5. The hook is pivoted by a transverse pin or bolt; and the upper wall of the cavity of the drawhead has adepression to receive the top of the hook, which is heid in operative position by a curved spring 6 located on thelower face of the draw-head and having its rear end Secured to the draw-bar or rear portion of the draw-head, and having its front end bearing against the iower face of the hook. The hook is depressed to release the link by a rockshaft 7 having an arm 8, which is connected with the hook by a chain 9; and the Spring 6 curves beneath or spans the rock-shaft, and permits the draw-head to have its usual movement without the rock-shaft coming in contact with the Spring. The rock-shat't is journaled on the frame of a car 10 and its arm 8 extends forward; and the ends of the rockshaft terminate in handles at the sides of the car to enable the operation of uncoupling to be performed without going. between cars. The front portion of the hook is beveled, and the link entering the draw-head will depress the hook an'd pass over the iatter, and thereby automatically couple.
Any suitable means may be provided for enabling the rock-shaft to be turned, and the operation of uncoupling to be performed from the top of a car; and changes in the form, proportion and the minor detailsof construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrifieing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- In a car coupling, the combination with a car, of a draw-head provided in its bottom with an Opening communicating with its cavity, a hook arranged in the Opening and pivoted at its rear end to the draw-head,a rockshaft journaled on a car and extending transversely of the same-and provided with an arm, a chain connecting the arm to the hook, and a curved spring arranged on the bottom of the draw-head and secured at its rear end and having its front end bearing against the hook, said Spring extending across and being out of contact with the rock-shaft, substantialiy as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL R. JOSLYN.
Witnesses:
