G. W. BUTLER.
GA3 G'OUPLING. No. 268,386. Paftented Dem-5.1882.
lll',
UNiTED STATE-s PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGEW. BUTLER, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM B. SHOEMAKEB, OF SAME PLACE.A
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 268,386, dated December 5, 1882.
` Application tiled July 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BUTLER,
.of Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State ings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a' perspective view of my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.- Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. et is a top view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like` letters of reference.
This invention relates to that class ot' carcouplings which operate automatically when i als the cars come together; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the draw-head, which is provided at its front end with a V-shaped horizontal slot or opening forming the mouth, and surrounded by a frame or ilange, B.
C is a vertical slot, extending through the entire length ot' the draw-head.
D is the coupling-pin, which is pivoted upon a pin, E, in the slot G, just above the month of the draw-head. Said pin or lever, as it might be termed, has a curved arm, G, which is provided with a notch, F, in its front side. The rear side ot the arm G is separated by a recess, H, from the plate or body I of the lever, which is weighted, so that when the pin is released or uncoupled the said plate I shall swing down and hold the arm G in a horizontal position. The front side of plate I is beveled, as at J.
K is a lever, pivoted in the slot C near the front end and below the mouth of the `drawhead. Lever K has a tooth, L, to engage the notch F of the coupling-pin, and a spring, M, is arranged, as shown, to force lever K upward, in order to effect such engagement automatically.
N is a rock-shaft, mounted transversely in a 5o draw-head and having an arm, O, adapted t0 bear downwardly upon the rear end of leverr K, and thus release the latter from the coupling-pin. Shaft N has at one end a crank, I?, from which a connecting-rod, Q, extends to the top of the car, from which said shaft may be operated, for the purpose of nncoupling, by simply raising the connecting-rod Q. By depressing the connecting-rod Q, the rock-shaft N is turned in the opposite direction, thereby 6o raising the arm O and bringing it in contact with an arm, It, extending forwardly from a transverse shaft, S, mounted in the draw-head.
To the ends of shaft S, which extend beyond the sides of the draw-head, are attached the ends of a bail, T, projecting forwardly into the month of the draw-head, where a transverse groove, U, is provided for its accommodation. When the connecting-rod Q is depressed, as stated, the bail T is raised, thus 7i raising the coupling-link which has been previously inserted into the month of the drawhead, and enabling it to engage the draw-head of an adjoining car of any height.
The rock-shaft N may' also be operated by 75 means ofa crank, U', at its opposite end. Said crank is connected, by,a rearward-extending pivoted rod, Y, with a hanger, V, pivoted under the body of the car.
W is a lever, pivoted to the side of the car ic and working in a slot, X, in rod Y, which may be thereby manipulated, thus operating the rock-shaft N.
The operation of my invention-will be readily understood from the foregoing description,.8 5
'taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is simple, convenient, and may be easily operated without the necessity of going between the cars.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United Statesl. The combination, with the draw-head A, having mouth B and slot C, oi' the pivoted coupling pin or lever D, having curved arm G, provided with notch F, recess H, and plate or body I, having beveled front side, J, and the lever K, having tooth L and spring M, as set forth.
2. The combination, with draw-head A, having mouth B and slot C, of the pivoted couppin D,lever K, having tooth L, spring M, shaft S, having arm R, and bail'l, rock-shaft N. hav- ]ng-pin D, the lever K, having tooth L, spring` ing` arxn O and crank U, pivotcd rod Y,lhav
M, and the rock-shaft N, having arm 0, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the draw-head A, having mouth B and slot G, ot' the pivoted` ing slot X, hanger V, and lever W, substantially alsV and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature coupling-pin D,1ever K,having tooth L,spring in presence of two Witnesses.
M, shaft S, having arm R, and bail T, and the rock-shaft N, having arm O, as set forth.
4. The combination ofthe draw-heed A, having mouth B and slot C, the pivoted coupling- GEORGE W. BUTLER. Witnesses:
JNO. B. CLOTWORTHY, BRAD. G.BARN1TZ.
