GARMENT-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,437, dated June 27,1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. SMITH, of Waterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to an improved garment fastener especially adapted to be attached to the end of a supporter, but which can be used in any other relation where a secure fastener of this kind is required.

My fastener belongs to that class which are formed in such a manner that the lower end of the fastener is narrowed so as to form a contracted space into which a bight of the fabric forming the garment is jammed and thereby securely held. As the tendency on the part of the fastener'at this pointis to cut or wear the said fabric, I form at this point a broad rounded bearing surface which almost, if not entirely, does away wit-h the possibility of such wear to the garment, this being the object of the invention.

My device is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an enlarged perspective view of the end of a garment supporter having a fastener embodying my invention attached to it. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastener detached from the supporter. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33 (Fig. 2). Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4. (Fig. 2). Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 (Fig. 2) the dotted line showing the position of the garment when secured in place, and Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of portions of the fastener.

Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the figures.

A A are sheet metal blanks, preferably brass, out or stamped into the shape shown inFigs. 6 and 7. Suitable lugs B B andD D are preferably formed on one or both of the blanks for the purpose hereinafter described.

E E are lugs projecting from the inner edge of the blank for the purpose hereinafter described.

F is a wire bent to conform to the curve of the lower and inner edge. This wire forms a smooth rounded lining for this edge of the fastener and it will be seen, therefore, that there can be little or no tendency upon the part of the fastener to wear or cut any portion of the garment to which it is attached.

1 am well aware that there are patented fasteners of this class having a rounded lining or bead along this same edge for the same purpose, but none of them contain the improved construction that is the feature of my invention. At the same time the blanks AA are formed, the inner edge G, of the blanks, or that part which forms the narrowed throat, is stamped to conform to the shape of the wire F, so that when the blanks are placed together a grooved recess is formed to receive the said wire F, which is placed within the same. The lugs B B and D D are then bent over and the two blanks secured together. By pounding down the inner projections or lugs E E, so that they will lap around the ends of the wire F the said wire will be securely prevented from becoming detached from the fastener, and always offers a rounded smooth edge to contact with the garment to be supported. The fastener thus formed is of a simple, durable and very inexpensive character.

The main feature of my invention is the manner in which the wire F forming the beaded edge, is held in the fastener by means of the groove G, and also the use of two blanks A A suitably held together. It is not my intention to limit myself to any specific form of securing the said parts together.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A garment fastener consisting of two blanks Which are counterparts of each other, and with grooves along their inner edges, which form when said blanks are secured together a substantially semi-circular groove, with a wire bead inserted in said semi-circular groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A garment fastener consisting .of the blanks A A, having the lugs B B, D D, adapted to secure said blanks together, the raised inner edges G, and the wire bead F, substantially as described.

3. A garment fastener consisting of the two blanks A A, having the lugs 13, D, E, and the raised inner edge G, in combination with the wire bead F, substantially as described.
