UNITnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. LEGGATT, OF HAMILTON, CANADA.
BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,111.3, dated .Tune 2'?, 1893.
Application filed September 28, 1892. Serial No. 447,206. (No model.)v
To afZZ whom. it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. LEGGATT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hamilton, in the countyof Wentworth, inthe Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Door-Bolt, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door bolts, in which a vertical bolt, provided with arubber tip, and incased in a metallic casing, is operated and adjusted vertically by means of pressure by the foot on the upper end thereof, in conjunction with mechanism in the interior of said casing; andthe objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a bolt capable of being operated by the foot; second, to afford facilities for the proper adjustment, with certain pressure, of the bolt, having rubber tip, to any position on the Hoor, when door is partially open; and third, to provide means to retain said bolt in position of pressure against the door, or in an aperture, and to release the same. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the entire device, with three parts broken away to show the interior. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the same, through the broken lines, w, m. Fig. 3 is a section through the broken lines, c, fn, having bolt removed. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through the broken lines, o, c, with its central bolt. Fig. v is a side elevation of the top of bolt.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The casing, A, having screw holes, a, is screwed to the lower part of a door, H, as shown in Fig. 2. The bolt, B, as shown incased, is provided at its lower end with a rubber tip, cork, or material of like nature, indicated by c, which is inserted into said bolt. The upper part of bolt has a projection, D, which, when pressed downward by the foot, inserts the lower end of bolt into an aperture in the oor, and wheny desirable to have the door partially open, then the rubber tip is used, with pressure against the door, in lieu of an aperture. To retain the bolt in the ap- "erture, or-against the floor, the said projection, D, when pushed downward by the foot, is, at the same time turned to either side, thereby engaging the thread, E, which is on two sides of the bolt, .with the thread, F, of the base of casing, and the inner part, I, of cover, J. The section of the part of bolt having thread, is seen at Fig. 4, having two sides flattened. This thread extends from the shoulder, K, to the shoulder, L. W'lien releasing the bolt from its pressure position, it is necessary to press the foot on the said upper projection, D, and at the same time bring it to a right angle to the door, and the spiral spring, S, will raise the bolt to its position as shown. The said spring presses against the partition, fm, of case and the collar, n, of bolt. The partially inclosed upper end,'n,, of casing, retains bolt in position. It will be perceived, that that part of the bolt which is threaded, is, when descending or ascending, entirely free, on account of its flattened sides, but when turned to either side, it engages with the threaded casing on the line, c, t, also with a portion of the cap at this particular place. Bolts ot' this construction may be applied to doors, in an inserted manner, as well as on the face, when required, with only the foot projection protruding. Y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a door-bolt, of a casing, A, provided with a slot, having partition, fm, partially inclosed upper end, fn', and a part of the inner base of casing, threaded as at F, the cover, J, threaded as at I, the bolt, B,hav ing projection, D, collar, n, and threaded at E, with two sides flattened, and the spiral spring, S, substantially as described and set forth.
JOHN A. LEGGATT.
