DISINFECTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,957, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed January 7, 1893. Serial No. 457,674; (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer-w Be it known that we, GEORGE N. BOTSFORD and FREDERICK G. BOTSFORD, citizens of'the United States, and residents of Oleveland,in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to disinfecting devices for use in dwellings, hospitals, &c for purifying and deodorizing theair and destroying noxious gases arising from sewers, closets and other sources of contamination.
The invention consists in the new construction and combinations for automatically applying a disinfecting agent, substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a front elevation of our new device with inolosing cage and perforated cone removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the perforated cone.
A represents a board or back for supporting all the parts of the disinfector and which may be hung or secured on a Wall or other parts of a room.
B is a cylindrical disinfectant holding vessel supported on the lower half of said board, fastened by means of screws or nails through lugs or ears. Through the central part of said vessel is provided a flue 0, open at the bottom and extending upward some distance above the top of said vessel in the form of a frame or open not work 0 the space within the vessel surrounding said flue forming the chamber for holding the disinfecting liquid.
D is a cylindrical Wick or tube of felt or other absorbent material applied on the outside of said central flue C, reaching from the bottom of said vessel B, and submerged in the liquid therein, to and covering the frame C ,,the upper portion of the wick having perforations and the top end only partly closed to enable a free circulation of air upward through the flue and out through the perforation whereby evaporation may readily take place and the disinfecting odors easily exuded and quickly disseminated.
The top of the vessel B is provided with a neck with funnel mouth B through which the wick is slipped in sliding it on over the tube or fine 0. The purpose of the funnel mouth is to prevent slopping over of liquid when the disinfector is used on cars or ships.
E is the filling neck and stopper for putting the liquid in the vessel B.
F is a reticulated cone set over the upper part of the wick and resting on the top of the vessel B for protecting the wick. G is a Wire or perforated sheet metal cage or casing covering the entire disinfector as a protection for the same, and may be hung or hinged at one side to the board or base for convenience of swinging it outward to get at the disinfector for filling or otherwise.
Having described our invention, we claim 1. In a disinfector the combination with a supporting board, a disinfectant holding vessel mounted on lower part thereof, and having a central flue open at bottom and having a frame extending above said vessel and an absorbent wick supported on said flue and frame, itslower portion adapted to be submerged in the liquid and its upper part adapted to exude the odors from said'liquid and a.
reticulated cone covering said wick above the vessel, substantially as set forth.
2. In a disinfector, the combination with a supporting board a disinfectant holding vessel, mounted on lower part thereof and having a central flue open at bottom,and having a frame extending above said vessel, and an absorbent perforated wick supported on said flue and frame, its lower portion being'submerged in the liquid and the upper part adapted to exude the odors from said liquid, and a reticulated cone covering said wick above the vessel, and a hinged wire or perforated sheet metal cage covering the entire disinfector, substantially as set forth.
