UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK SWEET, or KIRKSVILLE,MISSOURI.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,897, dated. June 2 0, 1893.
' Application filed January 22,1892- Serial No. 118,972. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SWEET, acitizen of the United States, residing at Kirksville, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a washing machine having a pendent rubbing device attached to vertical supports; and the object of my invention is to perform the operation of washing, by rubbing and pressure combined; and at the same time, at desired intervals, sprinkle the clothes that are being washed, with clean suds or water; thereby greatly facilitating the operation of cleansing. I attain these objects by the novel construction and arrangement of the various parts illustrated by the accompanying drawings; in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the entire machine, constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2, is a vertical cross section, showing more clearly the construction of the working mechanism of the machine.
Similar letters referto similar parts th rou ghout the drawings.
The box A, may be constructed of any desirable size and form, having the supports B B, one on each side, and provided with circular slots either in connection therewith, or in a board attached thereto; as desired; wherein are inserted the rounds or slats C O, which are somewhat oval in shape, and placed loosely in the slots, and consequently rock or tilt under the pressure of the rubber rollers, which creates a friction, thereby rubbing the clothes and pressing the water out at the same time. The swinging frame D D, is journaled in blocks which slide in grooves at the upper ends of the supports B B, and which are forced down by the springs F F, within said grooves. To the lowerend of the frame D D, there is pivoted a rocking rubber, consisting of side pieces E E, and rollers G G, journaled therein. The vessel K, for holding suds or water, is provided with a faucet H, having the valve I, attached thereto with a suitable hinge, and kept in position by a spring J, in any suitable manner, and is operated by a round of the swinging frame, D D, when the frame is pushed forward so that a round thereof may strike the valve 1, thus raising it and allowing a portion of the suds or water to escape, and thereby sprinkle the clothes at desired intervals, greatly facilitating the operation of cleansing.
A machine constructed according to my invention, with a rubbing foundation constructed of slats, and a rocking rubber constructed of rollers that press the slats apart under the clothes, and thereby create a friction, and at the same time allow the dirty water to pass. away, combines all the desirable elements of hand-washing. The rocking motion of the rubber allows it to be operated more easily; for the front roll can rise and pass over thick'places in the clothes much better than if the rubber were held in afixed position, and the clothes being always in sight, the soiled parts can be washed until clean.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 n In a washing machine, the combination of the bed, the swinging rubber, and the vessel provided with a spring-closed valve located in the path of the swinging rubber, whereby the valve is openedby the movement of the rubber, all substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
FRANK SWEET.
