SELF-THREADING LOOM-SHUTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,784, dated June 20, 1 893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH A. GENDRON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Nashua, in the countyof Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Threading Loom-Shuttles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to an improvement in self threading weaving shuttles, and the novelty will be fully understood from'the following description and claims when-taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in

Referring by letter to said drawingsz-A, indicates the shuttle body, and B, the bobbin which may be of any ordinary or approved construction.
The shuttle body A, is provided in one of its side walls near its forward end with an orifice a, and the bottom orfloor of said body is pitched slightly toward the orifice, shown at b, for the purpose of seating my improved device, as will be presently described.
G,indicates my improved threading device. This device may be formed from metal or other suitable material, and for the sake of cheapness and durability is formed from a single piece, comprising a base 0, having apertures d, for the reception of screws or other suitable devices whereby the whole may be secured in the body of the shuttle. Rising from this base is a post or upright 6, upon which is formed a camshaped plate f, which in practice extends inwardly and forwardly within the shuttle body. Rising from the base on the outer side of the cam shaped plate f,
is a guide post g, which is designed to guide the thread into the eye 71, which is exposed through the orifice a, of the shuttle. This threading device or casting O, is furthermore provided with a recess i, which is alsodesigned to be exposed through the orifice of the shuttle body so as to permit the partial insertion of the operators finger to receive the thread as it passes from the eye across said recess. The eye h, is formed at the base of the guide g, and partly within the cam or guide flange at the base of the plate f.
D, indicates a vertical flange which is arranged on the inner side of the casting between the base and cam plates for a purpose t which will be presently described.
In connection with the threading device I have provided a means for removing kinks and detecting knots in the thread. This device comprises a clamp E, which is placed upon the flange D, and carries an upwardly curved branch is, which may be formed of wire or other suitable material and which is designed to touch or nearly touch at its free end and at the under side of the platef, and two shorter branchesZ, which are directed downwardly and may touch the base plate, so
as to present a flaring entrance for the passage of the thread between the respective arms or branches, as better shown in Figs. 2, and 4, of the drawings.
In placing my improvements upon old shuttles it is simply necessary to cut an orifice a, in one side and bevel the bottom as shown at b, and in a plane with the bobbin, while with new shuttles, they may be so constructed in the manufacture. After the body has thus been formed the casting should be placed so that the eye, the guide post g, and also the aperture or recess 1', will be exposed through the orifice a, when the base plate may be socured by screws or other suitable fastening devices.
To thread the shuttle the thread should be taken from the bobbin, and a loop formed, after which it should be placed over the cam. plate f, or loop taker as it may be termed, and drawn until said loop is guided by the beveled edge or cam surface m, of said plate,
aided by the guide post g, down to the eye h.
In this position the thread will be exposed through the orifice a, and also in the recess 2', when by simply inserting the finger of the other hand into said orifice the free end of the thread will be drawn out of the shuttle through the recess i, and the orifice a, where it will be properly held in the eye h, ready for use.
While I have described the plate f, as being of cam shape, yet it is only necessary that-it should be so constructed asto receive a loop from the bobbin and have a bevel such as m, to guide the loop down into the eye, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the exact form of loop taker which I have shown and described. A device of this character may be very cheaply manufactured and at a minimum expense may be placed in new shuttles as well as in such shuttles as are at present in use, and by reason of the device being placed on a pitch or incline, the drawing of the loop into the eye is much facilitated.
Having described my invention, what I claim is V 1. In a self threading shuttle, the combiuation with the body having an orifice in one of the side of thecam plate and the eye and also exposed in the orifice of the body, substantially as specified.
2. In a loom shuttle, the threading device comprising the base and cam plates and having the flange D, arranged between said base and cam plates in combination withthe clamp, removably secured to the said flange and carrying the long upwardly curved arm and the two short downwardly curved arms to receive between them the thread from the bobbin, substantially as specified.
3. The shuttle body having the lateral orifice at its forward end and also having its base or floor inclined as described, in combination with the casting secured upon said inclined .base and in the orifice and having the looptaker, and also the recess 11, the vertical guide jpost arranged at the side of the loop-taker, iand the eye at the base of the post and on'the outer side of the loop-taker;.said-eye, the'guide post and the recess 1', being exposed in the ,lorifice of the shuttle body, substantially as ispecified.
