SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,764, dated June 20, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Chart- Displayer, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a chart displayer, designed to facilitate the manipulation of reading charts, &c., such as are used inprimary departments of schools, 650., the same being fully described in connection with the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view, showing the top and side curtains partly drawn to conceal a portion of the chart. Fig.4 is a side view showing the manner of engaging the cord to lock the curtain (attached thereto) in the desired position. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the chart holder.

A represents the frame of my chart displayer, the lower portion of which is in the form of a chest, B, which is adapted for the reception of charts when not in use. The front of the chest is provided with a sliding door, 0. r

The chart frame or holder, D, slides vertically between the side uprights, E E, of the frame, the latter being provided with grooves, e, to receive the edges of the holder. The holder is also provided with a groove, F, at its lower edge, and spring-clips, G G, to engage the card or chart and hold it in place.

The roller, H, arranged in a box, I, is connected by means of running cords, h h, with the'bottom of the chart holder, an operating cord, K, being attached to the same roller in such a manner that when the operating cord is drawn the roller is rotated and the running cords are reeled thereon, thus elevating the chart holder, and when the operating cord is released the weight of the chart holder causes it to descend, thus rotating the roller in the opposite direction and reeling the operating cord. The side curtains are mounted parallel with the uprights, above-mentioned, upon opposite sides of the display opening, L, said side curtains, M M, being provided with sprin rollers and operating cords, N N, which extend across the display opening and around anti-friction rollers, 71 n. In juxtaposition to said anti friction rollers, are arranged spring clips, 0 O, by means of which the operating cords may be clamped to look their respective curtains in any desired positions. The top curtain, I, is mounted horizontally above the display opening, being connected to a spring-roller having a stop-mechanism, of any preferred construction, (such as are employed in connection with spring-roller window-shades being suitable,) whereby the curtain maybe stopped at any desired point.

The operation of my displayer is as follows: Having adjusted a chart in the holder, the latter being reached for this purpose by raising the sliding door, it is elevated by drawing the operating cord connected with the roller, H, until it occupies the display opening. If it is desired to expose only a portion of the chart, as, for instance, a line, word, or letter, it is accomplished by drawing the top and side curtains. All that portion of the chart below the desired word or line may be concealed by dropping the holder a suitable distance behind the door, or screen, 0. In this manner any portion of the chart may be displayed, thus enabling the tutor to confine the attention of the class upon the particularpart which is being emphasized.

When the curtains are released they roll automatically thereby enabling them to be operated quickly and effectively.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a chart displayer, the combination with a suitable framework or casing having a display opening, of a sliding chart holder normally arranged below said opening, curtains mounted at the top and sides of said opening, and means to operate the holder and curtains, substantially-as specified.

2. A chart displayer provided with a vertical screen a sliding chart-holder adapted to slide in rear of said screen, side curtains and a top curtain, substantially as specified.

3. A chart displayer provided with a display opening a sliding chart holder provided with clips to engage the chart, a roller connected by means of cords to the holder, and

an operating cord connected to the roller to operate the holder, substantially as specified.

4. A chart dispiayer provided with sliding chart holder, draw-curtains attached to spring rollers and provided with operating cords, and clips to engage said operating cords to hold the curtains in the desired positions, substantially as specified.
