SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,670, dated June 13, 1893.

To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Games SKI'MER GAHA- GAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rod-Adjuster and Clamp for Artesian or Oil Wells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rod adjusters and clamps for Artesian or oil wells; and it has for its object to provide a combined adjuster and clamp adapted for gripping and adjusting the pump or polish rod of Artesian or oil wells in pumping the same.
To this end the invention contemplates certain improvements in devices of this character which connect the pump or polish rod with the walking beam of the operating mechanism so that the rod can be adjusted and gripped in any position while standing on the derrick floor, and thus avoiding the danger attendant upon going out on the walking beam itself to adjust the rod by the clamp at the end of such beam as is now usually done.
With these and other objects in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front View of a combined rod adjuster and clamp constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line xw of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the intermediate combined stirrup and rod brace.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a metal stirrup comprising the opposite stirrup arms B, connected at their upper ends by the integral rounded bearing bar or cross-piece C, which is mounted in the usual bearings at one end of the walking beam, so that the opposite arms B, can embrace the walking beam, which thereby serves to steady the supported stirrup. The opposite stirrup arms B, converge, and terminate at'their lower adjacent ends in the opposing flattened clamp-heads D, each of which is provided with a semi-circular clamp groove E, corresponding with the groove in the opposite head, both of the grooves being designed to receive the round piston or polish rod F, of Artesian or oil well pumps, which rod is designed to be clamped firmly in position between said heads. Clamping bolts G, pass through the opposite heads D, on each side of the grooves therein, and provide means whereby the said rod F, can be tightly gripped, or clamped, in any adjusted position without the possibility of slipping.
At a suitable intermediate point, the opposite stirrup arms B, of the stirrup, are connected and firmly braced by the intermediate brace bar H. The brace bar H, has flanged ends h, riveted to the inner sides of the arms B, and is further provided in one side thereof with a notch l, which receives the upper portion of the piston or polish rod F, which projects into the stirrup. A removable brace plate J, is suitably clamped in position on top of the brace bar H, and is provided-in one edge thereof with a notch K, opposing that in the brace bar and also embracing the piston or. polish rod. By reason of the combined stirrup and rod brace just described, the arms of the stirrip are not only braced together, but the rod itself is so braced as to be prevented from bending, and possibly breaking. By loosening the clamping bolts G, the rod F can be readily adjusted when desired,and in replacing a rod the brace plate referred to can be removed.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to, Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined rod adjuster and clamp,a metal stirrup having opposite converging stirrup arms terminating in grooved clamp heads adapted to adj ustably grip the pump rod, and a sectional brace arranged inside of the stirrup intermediate of its ends and secured to the inner sides of the stirrup arms, said brace comprising separate superposed members both of which embrace the pump rod, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined rod adjuster and clamp, a metal stirrup adapted to embrace the Walking beam of a well apparatus and having opposite converging arms terminating in grooved clamp heads adapted to adjustably grip the pump rod, an intermediate brace bar secured at its ends to the inner sides of said arms and having a notch at one side to receive the said pump rod, and a removable brace plate clamped on said brace bar and having an oppositely disposed notch in one side also embracing the pump rod, substantially as set forth.
