ALEXANDER H. BEACH, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
CLIP FOR SECURING IRREGULAR SURFACES TOGETHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,134, dated January 1, 1884.
I Application filed April 19, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. BEACH, of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips for Securing Irregular Surfaces Together; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clips or metallic devices for coupling or securing together irregular surfaces.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the clip, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the interior face of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the clip and two pieces of timber secured together by the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, there are shown two pieces of timber with three straight sides and an oval side or half-round,with-an end of one piece secured to the side of the other by means of the clip. Heretofore it has been the practice to secure such pieces together by means of angle-irons on the sides, frequently supplemented by a T-iron on the bottom or flat side. This. allows the end to become somewhat loose, and, as it does, a strain makes the top of the abutting piece roll a little on the curvature of the outline of the piece against which it abuts; and the object of this invention is to so make a clip that it will present an abutment or filling at the point of conjunction, of the proper shape to hold the parts firmly together.
angle.
A represents one arm of the clip, the interior face of which is of suitable shape to embrace the top rounded surface of the piece of timber B, to which it is desired to secure the piece 0.
D is the other arm of the clip, similarly formed, integral with the other part, and projecting from the side thereof at any des red The two channels or concave inner surfaces are upon the same plane, and at their point of conjunction there is formed an abutment, a, presenting on the part A the same curvature as the channel, and presenting at the head of the channel, in the part D, a ver-.
tical face, against which the upper or rounded part of the timber of the piece abuts, said abutment forming a filling between such end and the rounded side of the face against which the other abuts. It will be seen that pieces of this character can be secured together by a clip'of the construction described, with great certainty in result, the abutment enabling this to be done with as great safety as though the upper surface of the timber had plane surfaces.
What I claim as my invention is- A clip for the purposes described, provided with an abutment at the point of conj unction of the two arms of the clip, adapted to fill the inequalities of surface in two pieces of irregular surfaces which it is desired to secure together, substantially as specified.
ALEXANDER H. BEACH.
