STOP 000K CLAMP.
No. 300,501. Patented June 17, 1884.
WITJVESSES Ens Plwmuihognpmf, wnmgmn. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT Ericaa STOP-COCK CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed August E?, 1882. Renewed December 20, 19H3.
To all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, XVALTER S. PAYNE, of Titusville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Cock Clamps; and I do herebr declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. l i g. 2 is a vertical sectional View. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line ,r af, Fig. 2, and Fig. tis a detail View.
Corresponding parts inthe several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to stop-cocks generally used by plumbers where water is carried into buildings through pipes, the stop-cock being placed in connection withV the waterpipe nnd er the basement-floor or in the ground, as the case requires; andthe invention consists in certain improvements in the rod and l clamp for operating the plug of the stop-cock, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the stop-cock, and B the plug of the same, having the T-head C.
D D are apair of half-jaws or clamps, having recesses E to receive the T-head C, and provided with. Shanks I, having V-shaped grooves or recesses G, to receive the lower end of a square operating-rod, H, which extends upward through the licor I or outward through a wall, as the case may be, according to the location of the stop-cock.
The shanks F of jaws D are screw-threaded, to receive a clamping-nut, J ,which thus serves to connect the plug, jaws, and operating-rod. To prevent the withdrawal of the latter its lower end is swaged to forni ahead, K, for the accommodation of which recesses L are formed in the jaws .D between recesses E and G.
Upon the upper or outer projecting end of the rod H is adjusted a sleeve, M, the upper Patent N0. 300,501, dated June 17, 1884.
(No model.)
end of which has an operatingcrank, N,
while its lower end is provided with a lug or ilange, O, extending over one-fourth of its periphery.
A bearing for the sleeve M is formed by two semicircular plates, I, having downward-projecting semi-tubes Q, R', forming the box or bearing for the sleeve M, the former of these semi-tubes extending to the lower end of said tube, and the latter only to the liange O.
It will be seen that the semi-tube Q. forms a stop for the flange O, which thus prevents the crank, and consequently the plug ot' the stopc'ock, from being turned more than a certain distance, which of course may he regulated by the size ot' the lug or iiange O. It will thus be seen that the semicircular plates l?, which may be screwed or otherwise iirnfily secured to the floor or wall, form a solid and firm bearing and stop for the operating-rod, which is securely connected to the plug of the stopcock, which may be operated by this mechanism without undue strain.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi' the United Statesi.. The combination, as described, of the T- headed plug, the square operating-rod having its lower end swaged to forni a head, the
clamping-jaws having recesses to receive the head of the plug, the head of the operatingrod, and the lower end of the latter, and provided with screw-threaded shanks, and a nut, as and 'for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the operating-rod, mech anisni, substantially as described, for connecting the same to the stop-cock plug, the sleeve M, having crank N and lng or flange O, and the seniicircular plates P P, having semi-tubular bearings Q, It, of unequal length,
one of said bearings,Q forming a stop for the lug or flange 0, as set forth.
In testimony7 that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
` XVALTER PAYNE.
