UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN PLAYER, OF DUNKIRK, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BROOKS LOOOMOTIVE WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
BoILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,58*?, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed August 18, 1892. Serial No. 443,375. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PLAYER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Dunkirk, Chautauqua county, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification. Y
The obj ect of my invention is to so construct alocomotiveboiler of the Belpiere type, in such a manner that the crown of the ire box will be suitably supported, and that the stay bolts supporting the sides of the iire box will be of suflicient length to allow for the unequal expansion and contraction of the parts. These objects I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, in which- Figure 1, is alongitudinal sectional View of sufficient of a locomotive boiler to illustrate myinvention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view on the line 1 2, Fig. 1.
In the manufacture of this type of boiler the crown of the tire box, as well as the crown of the boiler have been made straight, as indicated by the dotted lines, and the side plates of the fire box have also beenl made straight from the point upward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. This necessitated the arrangement of the stay bolts parallel one with the other, with the exception in some instances the end bolts, which were slightly canted to brace the'outer edge of the boiler shell; but this arrangement of the outer stays was objectionable as it was very diicult to prevent leakage at the stays. The dat crowns would, in many instances, sag without great care was exercised in the construction of the boiler, and in many cases the boiler crown would be drawn down by the diagonal stays used generally in this class of boilers, as shown in Fig. 1.
I overcome the difficulties mentioned above and make a much stronger boiler, and one which is equally and thoroughly stayed.
Ais the boiler proper, having the side plates a a, and the arched crown a preferably of about the radius shown in the drawings.
B is the iire box, having the side plates b b, tied to the side plates of the boiler by bolts c, preferably arranged as shown in Fig. 2; b
is the arched crown plate of the lire box; this plate is attached to the side plates by a series of rivets.
Tying the crown of the fire box to the crown ofthe boiler is a series of stay bolts arranged on lines radiating from the center from which the radius of each crown sheet is struck, so that they willbe at right angles to the surfaces of both crown sheets, and when the stayy bolts d are suitably secured, the two crowns willbe tied firmly together, and support one another, as the sag of one will be resisted by the other. And the stay bolts at each side are in such 'a position as to rigidly support the upper edges of the boiler, and being arranged on the radial lines as shown, the joints can be readily sealed preventing leakage.
By making the crown plate of the iire box on the radius shown, I am enabled to draw in the upper edges b2 of the side plates of the tire box, and place between the sides of the fire box and the sides of the boiler, much longer stay bolts c than heretofore used, thus giving greater freedom for the upper portions of the ,side plates of the fire box to expand and contract, as it will be understood that the plates of the fire box expand more than the plates of the boiler, owing to the difference in temperature.
The boiler has longitudinal stays e, and transverse stays f, as clearly shown in the drawings.
By curving the crown plate of the fire box mud is carried oif the crown, and if the water in the boiler should be low, only asmall portion of the crown will be exposed.
I claim as my invention-` 1. The combination in a boiler of the Belpiere, type, of the side plates of the boiler, and side plates of the fire box suitably braced by transverse stays, with the crown plates of the boiler and fire box, curved on a radius, said crown plates being higher at the center than at the edges, with stay 4Vbolts passing through and connecting the two crown plates together, said stay bolts being on radiating lines, substantially as specified.
2. The combination in a boiler of the Belpiere type of the side plates of the boiler, and side plates of Ythe fire box tied to the side ICO plates of the boiler, with the crown plates ot' the boiler and re box curved on a radius, said plates being higher at the center than at the edges, with stay bolts passing through and connecting the two plates together, said stay bolts being on lines radiating from the center from Which the radius of each crown plate is struck, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a boiler of the Belpiere type, of the side plates cna and arched crown plate ai of the boiler, the side plates b, b, of the lire box, the upper edges b2 of the side plates projecting inward, tie bolts passing through and tying the side plates of the ire box to the side plates of the boiler, the arched 15 crown plate b of the fire box, with radiating bolts passing through and tying the two crown plates together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of zo two subscribing witnesses.
JOI-IN PLAYER.
