LOVENIIIA PEASE, or S'AGINAW, Mira-liens,
HAIR-CURL'ER.
srncmca'rxon forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,439. dated an; is, 1893.
To all whom itmay concern.- I
Be it known. that I, LOVENIA' E. PEASE, a
naw, county of Saginaw,.State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in ,lIair-Ourlers; and I declare the following to'be a 'full,.clear and exact description oftheiuventiomsucli as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to hair curlers, and its object is to provide a curler that shall be light, convenient, easily used.
In mechanical hair cu rlcrs as distinguished from those using heat as a fixing agent; the tress of hair is caught on some article on which it can be rolled, and then secured in sucha manner as to prevent the unrolling therefrom for a time. Some of these are formed in the general shape of a hair pin with some securing attachment, others are in the form of two half cylinders hinged together at one end and provided with a securing strap or hand. All such curlers give to the hair a short turn around a small wire or around a sharp corner alternating with a large curl or straight portion.
Myimproved curler produces aperfectly true spiral, can be adjusted so as not to pull and convenient. I
In the drawings, Figure Lshows-the curler in perspective. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectiou. Figs. 3 and 4 show its appearance in use, and dilferent modes of using it.
A, indicates the tube which I will call the roller because it is the part upon which the hair is first rolled, to one end of which is hinged by a'spring hinge a, a, a half tube B,
is concaved toward and fitting the tube A, with an internal radius equal to the external radius of the tube A. At the rear of the cover B, behind the hinge pin a, the cover B, is extendedin one or more hooks or horns -b. The hollow tube A, is also extended behind the the tube A, I place the two ends of an elastic band C, and make the band fast near the rear Serial 110.4%,185. (No model.)
end of the tube 1 to any convenient projection placed thereat. I prefer to make two holes I, e, through the bottom wall of the tube A,
The holding knot rests be utilized as a catch over which the ring D, I
is caught. After the hair'has been caught between the roller and holder and firmly rolled on them, the tension due to the band C, which is now strained, holds the hair firmly, preventing it from unrolliug. The protruding loop of the elastic band C, is shorter than the tube A, and requires to be stretched to allow the ring D, to be caught over the horn l), or c. A spring a, preferably made of a piece of spring wire with a spiral coil through which the hinge pin a, passes, holds'the tubeA, and the cover B, normally closed and is assisted by the elastic cord' when the same is carried back.
In use, the tress of hair to be curled is caught between the tube A, and the cover B; the hair is then rolled over both A andB; the
band 0, attached to the ring D, is caught on born I) or c, and the device left in place as long as may be desired, in'the form shown in Fig. 4. If preferred, the manner of use as shown in Fig. 3 may be employed.
What I claim is- 1. In a hair curler, the combination of a tubular roller, a concave holder hinged thereto, an elastic retaining cord, secured to the rear end of the roller passing therethrongh and projecting from the free end thereof a hook at the hinged end to receive and hold a loop of the retaining cord, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a hair curler, the combination of a tubular roller, a concaved holderhinged thereto, a closing spring with the hollow of said tubular roller, a hook at the hinged end and an elastic cord at the free end of the roller extending back tothe hook, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In a hair curler, the combination of a tubular roller, aconcaved holder hinged thereto, a closing spring within the roller an elastic cord projecting from the front end, diverging hooks adapted to be used as handles to spread the curler and receive and hold the frec'end of the elasticcord, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of--two witnesses.
LOVENIA E. PEASE.
