Patented June 13, 1893f fi/bflziimtot o4. WASNXNGTON u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE. f
JAMES T. CRONE, OF SPRINGTOVN, ARKANSAS.
STIRRU P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,283, dated. June 13, 1893.
Application filed February 10, 1893. Serial No.461i800. (No model.)
following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stirrups of that class constructed toopen or separate to release the foot of the rider in case of accident or runaway, and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap, yet durable and efficient device of this character, which will be more positive in its action, composed of few parts and those so arranged as not to be liable to become inoperative.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention in the present instance resides in the peculiar combinations, and the construction, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is-clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of. reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved stirrup. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the movable part thrown open. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through a modified form, showing a different form of spring.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views. I
The general shape and configuration of the stirrup may be such as may be desired, as may also the size, and the material may be that best fitted to the uses to which the stirrup is to be put.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the stirrup as of ordinary shape as the present invention does not reside in the shape or size of the device nor the material of which it is formed.
Referring now to the details of the drawings byletter, A designates one part of the stirrup which is practically hollow as shown and from one end of which extends theupthe movable portion of the stirrup; or it may terminate in a downwardly-inclined portion- Eas seen in Fig. 2 from which extends a horizontal pin or lug F preferably made separate from the-said portion and held therein in'any suitable manner; it'may be a breakable pin,
designed to be broken by the movement of the movable part. Itis designed to engagea hole or depression a in the upper endof th movable part of the stirrup.
F is the movable part; it consists of the portion f which is designed to fit within the hollowof the part A as shown and it may be weighted so as to normally assume a horizontal position between the sides of the said part A, or it may be acted uponby a spring to hold it in such position. It is provided with an upwardly-extending curved portion F which is provided at or near its upper end with a hole or depression ct designed to receive the pin or lug or projection on the horizontal portion 0, or the inclined portion E, as the case may be. At the junction of the portion f and the upwardly-extending portion F, or it may be at a point below the same, it is pivoted on a pivot G held in the walls of the part A so that the movable part can move easily on the said pivot.
As above stated the movable portion may have its horizontal portion weighted so as to normally remain in its horizontal position, or it may be acted upon by a spring for the same purpose. In Fig. 1 have shown this spring as a flat spring H held at one end in any suitable manner between the walls of the part A and its other end bearing upon the under side of the movable part near its pivot. In Fig. 2 the horizontal part is shown as Weighted,
5 while in Fig. 3 I have shown another form of A and after being coiled around a pin I near the pivot-end of the said part as seen at z' the ends of the spring are extended and passed through a loop I on the under side of the horizontal part of the movable portion, the ends j of the spring passing loosely through the said loop as shown so as to slide therethrough when the movable part is turned on its pivot.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and
a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
What I claim as new is The combination with the main part consisting of horizontal portion curved upwardly extending portion and upper cross-bar with inclined portion and horizontal pin, of the movable part pivoted between the sides of said hollow portion and consisting of curved vertical portion with upper inclined face with opening and a horizontal portion fitted in the hollow portion of the main part, and a spring arranged in said hollow portion and having a bend with one end held by a loop on the under side of the horizontal portion of the movable part, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES T. CRONE.
