To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, KONON IKPASSOVER, a subject of the Czar of Russia, (who have resided in the United States one year last past and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof,) residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Earth-Closets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consist of an earth closet having novel means, whereby the opening of the seat may be closed when not in use, and automatically opened when occupied.

It also consists of means for automatically throwing a covering or disinfecting material into a chamber-pot or vessel in the closet, after the seat is vacated.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an earth closet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents asection on line 00, 00. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the interior thereof. Fig. 4 representsa bottom plan view of the seat portion. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a chamber-pot or vessel which is placed within the closet.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings:--A designates the body of an earth closet having the back B, seat 0 and door D. In the back B, is the compartment E having a mouth F leading into the interior of the body A, said compartment being designed to contain earth, turf or other covering and disinfecting material.

Pivoted to the body is the seat 0, having an opening G, which is closed by the covers H, H, mounted on and sliding in grooves on the seat, and having the returning springs J, J, secured to them. Fastened to the seat (3 are pulleys K, K, over which pass cords or chains L, L, one end of each being fastened to the covers H, H and the other end to levers M, M, pivoted on the body, and having the links N, N pivoted thereto, said links heir pivoted to the seat.

P, P designate rods which are guided on sleeves Q, Q on the bottom of the body, said rods depending from the seat and secured thereto, and having springs P bearing up- Wardly thereagainst.

Fastened to the seat (3, is the slotted arm R, which depends into the body A.

S designates a standard having a swinging rod T mounted thereon, one end of said rod being engaged by the arm R, the other end thereof being secured to the crank U. The latter is pivoted to an axle 0;, which carries gear wheel U and ratchet U which are coupled by the pawl U, the same being hung on the wheel U, and engaging with said ratchet. A coiled spring S is so connected with said axle, and the wheel U that it will be wound up when the crank U is properly operated.

Pivoted in the sides of the body at the mouth F of the compartment E, is a shaft F,having a beater Vand a gear wheel Wthereon, which latter is adapted to mesh with the wheel U and to be moved thereby for rotating the beater V.

The operation of the device, is as follows: When the seat is occupied, it is depressed, thus forcing down the links N, N and arm R. The former depress the arms M, M which draw the cords L, L, thus separating the covers H, H. The arm R in descending operates the lever T, which moves the crank U, and winding the spring S a certain extent. When the seat is vacated, the same rises, owing to the action of the springs P P on the rods P, P. The covers H, H, are released and are drawn together by the springs J, J, thus again closing the opening in the seat. The lever T is relieved,'and the spring S is permitted to unwind, thus operating the gear wheels U and W, owing to the intermediate mechanism, whereby the heater is rotated, and it then blows or throws some of the earth, turf or disinfecting material into the chamber-pot or vessel, and spreads it over the mat ter therein. The pot or vessel X has at top a ledge Y, which may occupy a position under or close to the forward end of the bottom E of the compartment E, and the top edge of said vessel rises from said ledge, forming the peak Z, which acts as a guard for preventing the material from being blown in front of said chamber. The ledge Y prevents the material from dropping below the bottom E of the compartment E.

On the bottom of the bodyA are cleats A, which serve to guide the vessel X true in its operative position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An earth closet consisting of a body having a back, seat and door, and a compartment with a month leading into said body, an au-- tomatically closing cover for the opening in said seat, levers and cords connected with said sections, and mechanism connected with latter, a rotary beater at communication of said back and body, and mechanism connected with said seat and beater for operating the latter, said parts being arranged, substantially as described.

spring for operating said beater, a depending arm on said seat, and mechanism intermediate of said arm and spring for winding the latter, said parts being combined substantially as described.

4. A seat having an opening therein, and

covers for closing the same, in combination with cords L connected with said covers, 1evers M, M, pivoted to the body and connected with said cords, and links N, N, pivoted to said levers and to the seat, the cords passing over pulleys on the seat, substantially as described.

5. A movable seat, a depending arm,aswinging rod, acrank axle connected with said rod, and a rotary blade in a receptacle of the closet, in combination with intermediate pawl and ratchet mechanism, and a coiled spring,whereby the blade is operated when the seat is vacated, substantially as described.

6. An earth closet havinga back and body with communicating mouth, slats on the floor of said body forming guides, and a pail adapted to be moved between said slots and provided with a ledge Y and peak Z, said parts being combined substantially as described.

7. A commode having a compartment for covering material, and a beater at the base thereof, in combination with an arm, a lever, pawl and ratchet mechanism, and gearing intQLlIlBdlEtiG of said beater and the seat of the commode, whereby the beater is operated when the seat is vacated, substantially as described.

8. A commode having a compartment for covering material, and a beater therefor, in combination with a spring which is located intermediate of the seat'of the'commode and said beater, a pawl and ratchet mechanism gearing, an arm and lever, substantially as described, wherebythe spring is wound when the seat is depressed and caused to be unwound when the seat is vacated, thus rotating the beater, as stated.
