SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,920, dated June 6, 1893.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient receptacle for garbage that can be conveniently opened or closed when required, and when full can be easily removed and then returned to its combined platform and covering device, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of the device complete, showing the garbage receptacle in its place in its combined platform and covering device, and the cover closed thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view of the device complete, showing the cover open and the positions of the-several parts when it is thus opened. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the platform, showing also a horizontal section through the cover supporting standard near the lower end thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the combined platform and cover holding an operating mechanism, the garbage receptacle being removed.

The garbage receptacle is a strongly made cylindrical vessel, 1, made preferably of galvanized sheet iron. It is provided with a handle, 2, and is constructed and put together in the usual and well known Way and may be made of wood or any suitable material. It may also be made square instead of round or of any desired form.

A platform, 3, made of wood, cast iron or other suitable material, is provided with an upwardly projecting ring 4, made circular or of any suitable shape to receive the bottom of the removable garbage receptacle. This ring, 4, is rigidly secured to the platform and is preferably made of iron but any well known suitable material may be used. At the front of the platform is a handle, 5, (shown in Fig. 3) by which it is drawn about. It is also provided with casters, 5, so that it can be easily moved.

The top of the cover, 7, is provided with a rear projecting piece 14, and to the rear end of the projecting portion, 14, is pivoted by a pin, 15, a connecting-rod 16. The opposite end of this connecting rod, 16, is pivoted by a pin, 17, (shown by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 4:) to the foot lever, 11.

From the above construction and descrip tion it will be seen that a pressure of the foot on the foot step, 13, so as to press the lever, 11, down as shown in Fig. 2, will raise the cover so as to give access to the garbage vessel, and by removing the foot the cover will fall by its own gravity so as to close the re- It will be further seen that when the cover is thus raised, the garbage vessel may be easily removed to be emptied on the platform. The casters, 5, and the handle 5, allow the platform with its garbage vessel to be easily and conveniently drawn to any point at which it may be desired to empty the garbage vessel.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a garbage receptacle, the combination, with a platform, of a vertical standard secured thereto, a treadle pivotally secured to the platform, a cover pivotally secured to the top of the standard, a rod for connecting the treadle and the cover, and a receptacle loosely placed upon the platform,substantially as set forth.
