COMBINED RAIL TIE AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,883, dated June 6, 1893. Application filed May 21, 1892. Serial No. 433,791; (No model.)

Be it known that we, EDWARD M. HOWARD and THOMAS JAMES EAGAN, of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna, in the State of Pennsylvania,have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Rail Tie and Chair, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to the construction of railroad rail ties and railroad chairs combined.
Our object is to produce a tie provided with rail chairs upon its upper face, so arranged that they will grip and hold the rail effectually without the use of nails or screws, and adapted to release the rail readily when desired.
Our invention consists, in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1, is a side view of our rail tie complete, showing the rail chairs and the rails therein, in cross section; Fig. 2, is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3, is an isometrical elevation of the tie and rail chairs, complete, showing the main and supplemental ties separated. Fig. at, is a cross section on line 0000, in Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a cross section on line y y, in Fig. 1, and alsoon y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 6, is a cross section on line 2 z, Fig. 1. Fig. 7, is a view of a clamp which holds the sections of the ties together.
A-, is a tie composed of the main portion 1-, preferably having its sides and bottom concaved to better embed itself into the material in which it is placed, and having on its upper face the lugs or arms -2 and adapted on their right lower faces, to receive the base of the rail, as shown. The upper inner face of the section 1- is provided with a channel 3- extending its entire length and up to the lower face of the lugs -2--, and is provided centrally with corrugations, cogs or ratchets -4-, for the purposes hereinafter specified.
5-, is a supplemental tie constructed sub stantially as shown, in Fig. 3, and having upon its upper ends the lugs -6-- adapted to engage with and receive the base of the rail, upon their left lower edges, and also having its inner face corrugated or with cogs or ratchets -7-, as shown.
Our invention is operated as follows: The sections 1- are first embedded in the roadbed in the usual way, when the rails -B are placed thereon, having their bases engage with the lugs -2- upon the ends of the sections -l-, as shown. The supplemental tie -5 is then placed so as to engage with the channel -3 in the sections --1- and adapted to slide therein. The supplemental tie is then forced to the left until the lugs -6 engage with the opposite side of the rail when the lugs 6 and -7 mesh with each other. The bases 1 and -5 are then secured together by the clamp 8-, which prevents the corrugations -6 and -'-7 from becoming disengaged and thereby prevents them from longitudinally moving. It will thus be seen, that as soon as thesupplemental tie has been forced up against the base of the rail as far as it will go, the rail will be securely held in the chair formed by the lugs -2- and 6, until the clamp has been removed for the purpose of allowing the supplemental tie to be withdrawn. It will also be observed that the lugs -2- and --6- project laterally so as to allow each to rest upon the other section of the tie when in use.
We do not limit ourselves to the particular construction of tie shown, as it will be evident that it may be varied, without departing from the spirit of our invention. Neither do we limit ourselves to the particular means for holding the ties together, as it will also be evident that these may be bolted or otherwise secured together.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rail tie and chair, comprising a tie having lugsupon its upper ends and adapted to receive one side of the base of the rail, and having a groove and corrugations upon the upper innerrface, and a supplemental tie having lugs upon its upper ends adapted to reoeive the opposite side of the rail, said lugs projecting laterally so as each to rest upon In witness whereof We have hereunto set our the upper face of the opposite tie, and corhands this 10th day of May, 1892.
