Description
H. A. GILBERTSON.
Carriage-Seat.
' Patented Sept. 12, 1865.
Inventor: Qk WM Witnesses:
AM. PHOTO-LITHO. CUJLY (OSBORNE'S PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. GILBERTSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED FOLDING SEAT FOR WHEEL-VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,872, dated September 12, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. GILBERTSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Seat for VVheel-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my invention adjusted for use; Fig. 2, a front view of the same turned down or in a folded condition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates toanew andimproved folding seat for wheel-vehicles, such as are provided with a back and sides; and it consists in attaching the back and sides of the seat to the latter, and arranging the same in such a manner that the back and sides will automatically fold and unfold as the seat is turned up for use and turned down when not required for use.
A represents the seat, which is secured to the top part of the body of the vehicle by means of hinges a; and B B represent the sides of the seat, which are attached to the latter by hingesb; and 0 represents the back, whichis attached to the rods D D, the rods being each provided with a joint, 0, and their lower ends secured firmly to the seat. The rods D D above their joints 0 have each a rod, E, attached to them, and these rods E are each provided with a joint, (I, and extend along and are connected to the part of the body where the seat A is hinged by joints 0. By means of thesejointed rods D D E E, arranged and applied as shown, the back 0 of the seat will be folded down and turned under the seat when the seat is turned down, as shown in Fig. 2, and the back turned up in a proper relative position with the seat when the latter is turned up in a position for use, as shown in Fig. 1.
The sides B B of the seat are connected by swivel-headsf and links F to bent or right-angular levers G G, the inner ends of which have oblong slots 9 made in them for bolts 11. to pass through into the rods E E. The fulcra t of the levers G G are on the seat A, and by means of this connection between the sides B B of the seat and the rods E the sides will, as the seat is turned down, fold under the seat and unfold when the seat is turned up.
Thus by this simple arrangement the back and sides of the seat are made to fold and u nfold automatically with the turning up and down of the seat, and the sides of the seat may extend over or project beyond the sides of the body of the vehicle when the seat is turned up, thereby giving increased length to the seat when adjusted for use.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A folding or hinged seat for wheel-vehicles, provided with a back and sides, either or both, arranged and applied in such a manner as to admit of folding automatically by the folding or turning up or down of the seat, all constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
HENRY A. GILBERTSON.
Witnesses M. M. LIVINGSTON, G. L. TOPLIFF.
