No. 498,583. PatentedMay'30,1893..
FFICE.
WILLIAM H. SMAIVLEY, MORGAN SASSAMAN, AND MICHAEL W. BOVVSER, OF SOUTH ENGLISH, IOWVA.
CANOPY FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,583, dated May 1893.
' Application filed March 3, 1893. erial No. 464,601. (No model.)
, LEY, MORGAN SASSAMAN, and MICHAEL W.
7 useful improvements in canopies for protect-.
BOWsER, citizens of the United States, residing at South English, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canopies for Horses; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and.
use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and ing horses from the scorching summer sun or from rain or snow in stormy weather, and is adapted to be attached to the pole or shaft of a vehicle, and adjustable to allow of its being raised or lowered, and collapsible.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the applended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts through the several views, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of our canopy shown as attached to the pole of a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the attachment as used in connection with thills for one horse. Fig. 3 is a detail of the clamp used upon thills.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the pole of a two horse vehicle.
B, B are two standards supporting the canopy top, and are in sockets O, C, said sockets being constructed as shown of a metallic band portion 0 c, surrounding the pole, and having vertical cylinders D, D, slotted as shown at (Z, cl, so as to allow the cam levers E, to compress the cylinder against the standards to holdthe top at any desired height.
F. F. are braces extending from the tops of the slotted cylinders running to a point midway of the standards for strengthening the same. To the tops of the standards B, is pivoted the ridge rod G, having the frame work of ribs H, presenting a skeleton work over which to spread a canvas or covering of any suitable material. At any convenient position on the ribs nearest the standards, as at h, h, are pivoted the braces I, similar to the braces of an umbrella.
J are bars having slotted ends in which are pivoted the lower ends of the braces I, said bars perforated so as to slide over the standards.
Kare collarssurroundingthe staudards, and L are cam levers pivoted between the ends of said collars, and adapted to lock the top in a fixed position by lowering the cam against the perforated rod, thus causing the said collar to bind against the standard.
M, are pole supporters, which, when not in use fold up against the pole.
N shows a clamp as used when we desire to use our invention in connection with'thills; n are plates secured to the upper side of the shaft, and are provided with an extension n over which a tubing 0 rests, said tubing being threaded, and adapted to be screwed 5 It will be thus seen that our invention can be used equally well with single or two horse vehicles.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim to be new, and desire to secure by 0 Letters Patent, is
1. In acanopy for protecting horses, the combination of a pole or shaft, collars surrounding said pole or shaft, and supporting slotted cylinders for the reception of adjustable standards, afoldingtop pivoted to the endsof said standards, the cam lever for locking standard, the braces having pivotal connections, and a cam lever for holding the canopy in a spread or folded position, all substantially as shown and described.
2. A canopy top for horses comprising in combination a thill of a vehicle, platesP and 'n, clamp N, slotted cylinder 0, clamping deportin'g the pole, all substantially as shown anddescribed.
In testimony whereof we aff x our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. SMAWLEY. MORGAN SASSAMAN. MICHAEL W. BOWSER.
vice Q, standards B, to the tops of which is Witnesses: pivoted a ridge pole having ribs for support- A. HARDENBROOK, ing a covering, and the support M for sup- I W. C. MILLER.
