SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,285, dated. May 30, 1893. Application filed October 20, 1892. Serial No, 449,475. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Madison, in thecounty of Lee and State of- Iowa, have invented a new and useful Roof- Eracket, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to a roof bracket, adapted to be attached to a roof as a means of supporting a scaffold or platform, in the application of roofing or in the erection .of chimneys, &c., the object of my invention being to provide a simple, cheap and efficient device which may be readily and quickly applied without the use of outside means. 1
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following descrip tion and the novel features thereof will be particularly, pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my roof bracket arranged in the operative position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
A designates a clamp, having the pivotally connected jaws, B B, which are extended rearwardly beyond their pivotal points to form arms, B B, in one of which is mounted a clamping screw, 0, to engage or impinge against the other. This screw is threaded into a perforation, c, in said first-nam ed arm. Pivotally connected to the upper of the two jaws of the clamp is a swinging link, D which is bifurcated at its lower end, its two parallel arms,d cl,being separated sufficiently to pass upon opposite sides of the jaw. To the up-- per end of this link is pivoted a horizontal supporting arm, E, and to the outer end of the latter is pivotally connected the upper end of a vertical brace, F, the lower end of the latter being adapted to rest upon the surface of the roof, and being slightly beveled or sharpened to engage the material thereof to prevent slipping.
In operation, the clamp is engaged with the butt or lower edge of a shingle, the jaws being adjusted by the manipulation of the'setscrew, the link is allowed to lie at its upper end in contact with the surface of the roof, and, the lower end of the brace being engaged with the material of the roofing, below the clamp, the supporting arm is supported in a horizontal position. Two or more of these brackets are employed to support a board or platform for the use of the workmen.
It will be noted that the device is simple in construction and may be readily'attached to the roof.
The link D, which I have described in connection with my improved bracket, rests at its upper end upon the surface of the roof, and thereby transfers a considerable portion of the load to the roof by converting the downward pressure of the inner endof the supporting-bar into a pressure in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the roof, and thus relieving the clamping device of strain.
It is to be understood that changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

In a device of the class described, the combination with the clamping device adapted to engage thelower edge of a shingle, of a link D pivotally connected at one end to said clamping device and adapted to bear at its free end upon the surface of the roof above the clamping device, a horizontal supporting arm E pivotally connected at one end to the free end of said link, and a vertical brace F pivotally connected at its upper end to the free end of the supporting arm and sharpened at its lower end to engage the surface of the roof below the clamping device, whereby the superposed weight which is carried by the supporting arm is conveyed to the surface of the roof by the brace F which produces a vertical downward pressure and by the link D which causes a pressure in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the roof, substantially as specified.
